Parish Announcements

Mass in Moviddy Cemetery
It will be on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Like the others we will be blessing the graves and the Mass will be offered for those buried in the cemetery and for the families and friends of those who attend, no matter where these may be buried. Pray that we continue to be blessed with fine weather. In the unlikely event of inclement weather we will have the Mass in Cloughduv church after the priests will have visited the cemetery and blessed the graves. So far it has been truly edifying to see how the graves have been tidied and looked so well. I know those with graves in Moviddy will not be outshone!

From the Pastor's Desk

Things That Matter:
It is said of Adam and Eve that as they approached the gates of the Garden of Eden, on being asked to leave, that Eve remarked: "you know, Dear, we are living in times of great change" It's been a-changing ever since, but possibly never more so than in our own lifetimes. Change is rapid and unpredictable. We tire quickly of anything that smacks of permanence. Fashions, musical tastes and even the course of main roads are forever changing.

Many of the things that mattered in the days of yesteryear seem to have stood the test of time - for a long, long time. It would seem that the choices made by Solomon in to-day's first reading would cause more than mild surprise to-day. Given the choice he asked for a discerning heart instead of power, long life and wealth. Ten years ago 50 per cent of those asked would help a good cause if they had a windfall. To-day only 25 per cent would.

Have we lost sight of what is important? Like one depressed letter-writer to a columnist who wrote of how a flood destroyed 45 years of family treasures, letters and photos. Living with her husband, with children all moved away, she found her loss inconsolable. Could the columnist help her get over it?

The reply spoke gently of the columnist's mother's untimely death, followed by her father's three years later. She added: 'Not a day passes that I don't thank God for letting me have my parents for as long as I did. I know others not so blessed and some who have survived a far greater tragedy losing their children. Now, what were you saying about clippings and other "treasures"?'

Old Gold
(A parishioner recently sent me a gem from her storehouse of prayer.)

When the shadows of death gather round me,
And the portals of heaven draw nigh,
Will you come to me, Mary Immaculate?
Come and help me to die.
Come with St. Joseph, your escort;
Let me hear the sweet sound of your voice,
Saying 'now your exile is ending,
The time is at hand to rejoice'.

Prayer for Vocations
God our Father, send workers into your harvest. May the Spirit we received in Baptism touch the hearts of many to offer themselves in priesthood, religious life, and other forms of service. Give the parents and families of our parish, the wisdom and courage to support young people, in searching for and following the call of God in their lives

Dear Parishioners of Kilmurry Parish:
We've returned from Ireland "The Beautiful" from our second trip. Just wanted you to know that we visited your Church during the week of June 30th, 2002. I have before me your Church bulletin with the poem "I Asked God" and I think it is just beautiful. I have brought it home with me to copy and give out to my friends.
We loved your Church as well as your Country.
We traveled with Fr. Eoin Murphy who is originally from Crosshaven and has been with us for the past few years. Presently he is transferred to St. Joseph Church in St. Johns, Mi.
Our Church is St. Francis of Xavier in Otisville, Mi. USA

Hello,

I am trying to trace my Family History.

According to the Census for 1851, Thomas Myles 58 years, his wife Honora 58 years, Daughter Eliza 14 and Daughter Honora 10 years were living in Kilmurry South, where they were all born.

Thomas and Honora were my 2xGt.grandparents

If there are any of the Myles family still in the Parish I would love to get
in touch with them.

I am very impressed with your website and thrilled with the pictures of
Kilmurry and the Churches. I have read the Historical notes with great
interest. This is just what I have been looking for!

I would be most grateful for any information about my family and the Parish.
I look forward to your reply.

Many thanks,

Joan Peduzz

Hello There...

My name is Daniel Cotter and I live in Reading Massachusetts (Outside of Boston) . I came across your site while gathering information about my Grandfather who emigrated to the US in 1913. His US Naturalization Document show him arriving in Boston on The Franconia out of Queenstown England in June of that year and his birthplace is listed as Dooniskey Co. Cork (b. Oct 17 ,1891) He died in Boston in 1951, before I was born , and my father who was an only child , did not know much more about him.( He worked as a Merchant Marine and was away at sea for much of the time) At any rate , it would be greatly appreciated if you could provide me with any leads on how to research further into his background as I would love to know more about him . I have been to Ireland a few times before but had only known that my grandfather was from "someplace near Macroom" , until I received a copy of this document. My wife and I are planning another trip this fall and after finding your site we are looking forward to visiting your beautiful town!

Kindest Regards

Daniel J. Cotter

A research source notes that Cannaway Parish is part of Kilmurry Parish. The family tradition is that my great-grandfather, Thomas Desmond, was born in Parish Canavaa. The closest that I can find to that name is Cannaway. He was the son of Patrick and Hanora Lyons Desmond and the grandson of Thomas Desmond. No grandmother's name is given.

His birth date is given as December 1814, although that may not be accurate. Family notes show him associated with Patrick and John Desmond and a sister, unnamed. I believe that Patrick and John may have been his brothers.

Thomas was living in Miramichi, New Brunswick, Canada by 1840 where he was married to Bridget Power of Parish Ballygunner, Co. Waterford.

Would any of the church records cover this period? Any help you can give me in researching my family would be greatly appreciated.
