Flagstone of Memories

The Kilnadeema branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann has recorded their first CD. This is a great achievement for the branch, which was only formed in 1999. Forty-one members of the branch took part in the recording, with members as young as eight taking part. The CD was recorded at Cuan Studios in Spiddal, which is owned and run by noted musician and composer Charlie Lennon. The CD is called The Flagstone of Memories, the name of a reel composed by local composer and musician Vincent Broderick and has been a favourite at all branch sessions. The tune got its name from the flagstone where people danced their last set before heading for the boat to America or England. The CD pays tribute to the long musical heritage of East and South Galway. The sixteen tracks feature a great variety of music and pays tribute to the music of Vincent Broderick, Joe Cooley, The Ballinakill Traditional Players and branch patron Joe Burke. The standard of musicianship throughout the CD is very high and includes individual All-Ireland champions and Connacht winning ceili bands and grupai cheoil. The official launch took place in the Hill Bar, Kylebrack on Friday 1st April. A full house enjoyed a fabulous night of music, song and dance, where forty musicians took part in the night's entertainment. Special guests on the night were branch patron Joe Burke and his wife Anne. Also in attendance were noted musician and composer Vincent Broderick and members of his family. The first track on the CD is dedicated to Vincent's music. The night started with branch musicians performing a number of the tracks on the CD. Branch chairperson Claire Burke then addressed the audience and thanked everyone associated with the production of the CD. Branch patron Joe Burke then officially launched the CD and then delighted a captive audience with a couple of tunes, accompanied by his wife Anne. A number of visiting musicians then joined the proceedings and a great session followed. The night finished with a couple of tunes from Anne Burke.

The CD is available from local shops in Loughrea, including McInerneys, Graces, News & Choose and Kellehers Bar. It is also be available in Powells and Mulligans music shops in Galway or from any committee member.
