Located in the 'Sunny South East' of Ireland, Waterford, known as the Crystal County, is a bustling maritime county with a historic heart, attractive fishing villages, developing resorts, a scenic coastline and an unspoiled, upland "west county" with magnificent mountain settings.

For the active, the county boasts a wide array of activity opportunities. Golf, equestrian, walking, cycling, angling, water-sport and sightseeing are but some of the favoured active pastimes to be found here. There are many safe sandy beaches and coves to enjoy, particularly the county's three Blue Flag beaches.

Them are a variety of landscapes and scenery within the county which is dominated by the Comeragh mountains which reach a height of over 2,600 feet (790 metres). The west of the county is dominated by the RivervBlackwater and its tributary, The Bride. The east is characterised by low hills and undulating countryside. Waterford city is situated on the River Suir and is a major port on the estuary of Waterford Harbour.

Waterford has a rich heritage. From early times different peoples inhabited the county. The Vikings established a fortification called Vedraljord around 850 A.D., and this forms the origins of the city as we know it today The Anglo Normans captured the city in 1170 AD. Under the Normans the city prospered and emerged as the second city in Ireland.

In the 16th and 18th centuries Waterford was a dominant merchant city with trading links all over the world.

In the 18th century, the tradition of crystal manufacturing began and has continued to this day. Waterford County is today home to the world renowned Waterford Crystal.
