Killarney National Park Education Centre has been a designated Discover Science Centre since 2004. The activities included in the Primary School Nature Day support the SESE curriculum and have been vetted by DPS.
A visit to a Discover Centre is one of the criteria for schools wishing to achieve an Award in Science Excellence.

Go to http://www.primaryscience.ie/site/index.php The Primary School Nature Day is an activity packed day for primary school children during which they explore the natural environment in a fun and scientific way.
The activities include
Checking traps for small mammals such as wood mice & bank vole
Collecting mini beasts using pooters, sweep nets & beating trays Preparing the specimens caught for viewing and identification under Microscopes
Using Simple Keys for Identification
Collecting aquatic invertebrates to determine water quality
Scavenger Hunt & other nature games
Trek in the woods
TIME: The day normally runs from 10am to 2.30pm but times are flexible and can be changed to suit particular needs.
What to Bring? : A packed lunch, wellies, change of clothes, camera
AGE GROUPS:
The day can be tailored to suit all primary school age groups by our experienced teaching staff. Older age groups will be given worksheets on the day and a work book for follow p exercises back in the classroom.

Alternative Energy Station

For 2009 the centre is setting up an Alternative Energy Station which will allow children visiting the centre to explore energy concepts. They will have the opportunity to engage in a number of Energy Activities including a personal energy survey, examine forms of energy and sources. They would also make and use models to appreciate and understand how wild, water and solar energy can be used to address the earth's energy needs.
School Visits / Outreach Programme
Staff at Killarney National Park Education Centre continues to operate a very successful outreach programme which brings staff into schools with a number of exciting interactive presentations.
All our staff are HERITAGE SPECIALISTS and school visits can be organized through the Heritage in Schools Scheme
SUPER FURRY ANIMALS …this is an interactive presentation on the mammal species.
WHAT'S A BIRDIE? ....is the story of the bird species in Ireland

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY ….investigates the bugs in the school grounds
