Féile
Shamhna na gCrann
Féile Shamhna na gCrann was celebrated in October with
tree and woodland related activities all over the country. In
Killarney, a walk was lead through the diverse woodlands of the
Muckross peninsula by Chris Barron, Education Officer.
At 10.30am on Sunday 21st October, more than 50 people assembled
at Muckross House carpark to begin the walk. It was a real Golden
October morning, with blue skies, light winds and a nip in the
air.
The group visited the famous Yew
at Muckross Abbey (the Friary of Irrelagh) and learned about
the biology of this mysterious species, and some legends and
local lore associated with this particular tree.
Next stop was the Alder Carr along
the peninsula, where the adaptaions of tree species to cope with
waterlogged conditions was discussed. The lovely scent of bog
myrtle (Myrica gale) was sampled and it's traditional
uses explained.
Reenadinna yew wood,one of only
three yew woods in Europe was visited and the ecology of this
rare habitat was discussed.
Camillan oakwood was explored and the problem of Rhododendron
management discussed.
The Strawberry tree was observed along the shores of Muckross
lake.
The route was planned so that short cuts home were regularly
accessible, but about 30 hardy tree huggers completed the entire
circuit! A fine day was had by all!
