As part of our work in the Discover Science Programme,
4th Class are involved in the Greenwave Project. This mean we can
achieve a credit towards an Award of Science Excellence.
Scientists say that a 'green wave' can be seen moving across Europe from Outer Space. This 'green wave' is due to the buds opening on the trees. Our part in the Green Wave project is to observe and record the development of the buds on the Horse Chestnut and Hawthorn trees in our area. We had some difficulty finding a Hawthorn Tree but the horse chestnuts are easy to observe from the church grounds. Indeed we found a bud just starting to burst - shown by the arrow in the photo.

Surprisingly, we have noticed the hawthorn buds bursting before the horse chestnut, but only on the sheltered lower branches. Spring seems to be later this year.
