Miss Karen Rankin took a career break this year to venture out to Tanzania in Africa and work with the children and staff of Newlands Orphanage. Many of you donated money at Christmas to help support her.

Now see the difference that your contributions have made.

Read on to find out a little more ...

    February 2008

    Hi everyone,

A ClassroomI just wanted to thank you again for all your generous donations, and to show you the amazing changes your money has made in Newlands Orphanage.

The classrooms now have beautiful tables and chairs which make class and activity times much easier and cleaner! Tables and chairs for the (new) dining room have also arrived, so now the kids don’t have to eat on the floor.

I have spent a lot of your donations on food. It costs approximately €1400 month to feed all 59 kids plus the staff who work there.  This breaks down into approx. €15 euro per day on fresh foods like meat/fish, vegetables and fruit. The remainder each month is spent on dried foods like rice, ugali, beans, flour etc.

    The Dining Room

The kids are now eating well, they have a healthy diet and eat fresh fruit and vegetables every day, and meat or fish about five times per week.  There is enough dry food now to last for the next month.

The amazing thing is that there is now running water!!!  I can’t quite believe it myself!  This means that the level of hygiene is improving and infections are greatly reduced.

We are painting a small room which will be used as a nurse’s office, and getting a secure cupboard for medical supplies and a place to keep proper medical records.  Last week there was an out break of mumps and there were a lot of little sick kids.  At the moment they have no safe place to keep medicine and check the kids over.

The back section behind the orphanage is a real mess, and after any rain it completely turns to mud.  At the moment, some of the guys here are doing a big clear up job, putting in some concrete paths and gravel and generally giving the place a big tidy up.  They are also putting in a washing area for washing clothes.  It is about half way through now and it will be great when its finished as the rains are coming soon!

The girls dorms need new beds, as the wooden ones they have are infested with some kind of insect or bed bugs (not too sure but they are gross!) They have been ordered so we are hoping they will arrive in the next week or so!

Anyway thank you all so, so much.  It’s hard to explain what a difference you have made, even the little things like having new knickers (thank you Sinead!) or a pencil for school or some toys to play with really makes such a difference to them… life really is looking up for the kids now.  So thank you from all of them, they really appreciate everything!

    November 2007

I am working in an orphanage in a little village called Newlands,  outside the town of Moshi.  There are 58 boys and girls living in the orphanage. Most of the children lost their parents due to illness, some have relatives but unfortunately they can't look after them.  The youngest child is two and a half years old, and the oldest is 15. Most of the kids are the same age as you!

The orphanage is very poor, and depends mainly on donations. There are no luxuries, the children have very few clothes, often no shoes, no toys or books or any of the things which we take for granted in Ireland! Their diet consists mainly of rice, ugali (a maize paste) and beans.

Unfortunately, the children get sick often, sometimes due to bad diet, or from drinking dirty water, or from malaria.

Since I have been working here, conditions have improved quite a lot. New boys' dorms have been built, along with a new toilet block and even showers!  The children now get some fresh fruit and vegetables every day.  They have English lessons, playtime, some toys and books which they can play with in their free time.  We do art and games and fun activities.

We have been able to bring the kids to the market for new clothes and bring them to the doctor for medical help.

    New Dorms

There is a very exciting project going on at the moment which will hopefully provide running water to the orphanage and the community in the new year. This should really improve their quality of life, and decrease the spread of sickness. All these things have been made possible through donations from people like you!

So..after Christmas in Ireland, I am coming back in the new year, and I hope to have my bags packed with books and games and other things for the children. Any money you raise will be used directly to help the children and to improve their quality of life, and I will write and let you know how they are getting on!

So thank you all so much on behalf of the children in Newlands. They are a very happy bunch of kids, and are so grateful everything being done for them.

Thank you all, and have a wonderful Christmas!

    Karen
