KPMG FC 4 – 0 Shadwell KPMG
definitely showed the rest of the league that Shadwell’s defence wasn’t as
good as their record showed. Only conceding 16 goals prior to this match KPMG
put a dent in that with 4 goals. The game was very open and most of the early action was battled in the
midfield area where Vince and Tony had sparkling performances for the third
or fourth game in a row. The few chances that fell early on were nothing more
than rash shots from distance which didn’t seem to trouble both KPMG’s and
Shadwell’s keeper. The breakthrough came once again by great play by the
Horse. As he
drove forward from midfield with good link up play with both Hega and Vince
he saw the lone striker of Thomas Hegarty free in the Shadwell penalty area.
With precision and perfection the Horse played a great ball to the feet of
Thomas. With coolness and calmness Thomas, whose confidence is on cloud nine,
slotted the ball home with the simplest of ease. KPMG had a scare when their battleaxe of a player, Hega, had to go off
midway through the first half with an ankle injury. Although this may have
proved costly, Ronan came on to play a great match. The second goal of the
game from more of that workman like play that has proved clinical in the last
few matches. A move down the left hand side had Vince play the ball to the
feet of Brendan. Brendan who is big into his “Brotherly Love” couldn’t help but cross
the ball across the Shadwell goal to his brother Thomas. With an open goal
Thomas tapped the ball into the Shadwell net to increase the lead of KPMG’s
to two. In truth even the absent Huggie Bear wouldn’t have had trouble
scoring from that position, so that doesn’t say much for the goal. KPMG had a few shots turned wide by the Shadwell keeper. Most notably
the shot from Vince whose strike from 25 yards was dipping into the bottom
left of the net only to be parried for a corner by the Shadwell keeper. It
must be stated that KPMG’s set piece play was below average this week but
their link up play was that of an Eircom League side. Is that saying much
about Eircom League sides? I think not. The third goal was that fitted for a Champions League final. Ronan,
who set up Brendan for the chance to cross, played the ball down the right
hand wing. There was a hee-hawing from Shadwell’s penalty area that could
only be one thing. That’s right, Tony Horse was screaming for the ball. With
great vision and technique Brendan played and inch perfect cross to the head
of the Horse. With grace and poise the Horse rose to meet the cross with his
head. With similar technique to that of Teddy Sheringham, Tony bulleted the
header low and to the bottom right corner of the goal. Few keepers in the
world could have stopped it from reaching the back of the net. One of them
that could, being in the KPMG goal. Going in at half time three goals to the good KPMG weren’t over
confident. They knew Shadwell were a good side and with the wind in their
favour for the second half, keeper Barthez was warned of long range efforts.
This proved to be nothing of the sort. With a superb performance by all of
the KPMG squad it was very difficult for Shadwell to break them down and
unleash a shot on goal. Dazza Mc Grath was close to not finishing the game when a 50-50 ball
left him with a painful thigh. But unlike other KPMG players (HEGA) Darren
has the spirit and fight within him to battle on and put the pain to the back
of his mind and carry on playing a vital role in keeping that all important
clean sheet. The fourth and final goal was to prove the killer blow for the
Shadwell team. At three goals behind and playing with the wind there is
always the chance of pulling a few back but with a four-goal deficit the game
was well out of their reach. Briano Wanchope created the goal; yes that’s right Brian actually
passed the ball. We must not be critical of Briano as he has passed it once
before. An incisive ball was played through two Shadwell defenders where
Brendan was there to place the ball passed the out coming Shadwell keeper.
Brendan celebrated the goal with screams of delight. You can’t blame him but
with the lack of experience this youngster has on the big stage he couldn’t
control those emotions. A few shots near the end of the game were all that Shadwell could
muster up. They had roughly zero shots on target which was to the delight of
KPMG’s keeper because this meant the opportunity of making a blunder was out
of the question. This was a great result for the Accountants but the focus
must be on the next game. At this stage of the season every game is treated
as a cup final. This may seem hard for KPMG as they have never won a cup game
but they can still have dreams cant they? |
