KPMG FC 6 – 2 Vasco da Merchants

This is KPMG’s best scoring game so far this season. It was vital to get the win as KPMG try to push for promotion. For the first time in a long while a game only featured a Hegarty once on the score sheet. That’s amazing I hear you say. Well it is as the clan of Hega’s practically make up 33% of the regular squad.

The game started well for KPMG as they dominated the possession in the early goings. The first chance though fell for Vasco as they pushed their way down the left wing. But with a poor cross into the box the ball was left to go into the safe hands of Barthez.

The first goal was one of beauty as Thomas Hegarty, who is never far from the action, as he never drifts past the offside line, was played a ball to his feet. With only one look up he spotted the free Hughie Courtney available on the right side. With precision and accuracy he played a sublime ball to Courtney. This ex international, who hasn’t scored in his many games since his comeback, didn’t show signs of rustiness in front of goal as he drilled a shot past the Vasco keeper and into the back of the net. This really was the start the accountants were looking for.

The second goal of the game involved a certain animal of a player. His name: HORSE. Hughie Courtney fought a corner as this young forward never gives up and chases every ball. He learnt this on his trip away with KPMG Ireland. Tony Lyons decided to take the corner. He flew a beautiful ball across the danger area with pace. All it needed was a touch and this is what a KPMG got. Philip, a recent signing for KPMG, glanced at the ball only to see it fly past the outstretched Vasco keeper and into the net. Delight was written all across his face. With regulars in the team such as Mark Hegarty who hasn’t scored yet it ceases to amaze me how this young chap has one goal in two appearances. He is a model to us all.

The third goal of the game was as sloppy one indeed. A short goal kick was played out the right wing. This in turn was passed back into the centre of defence. Suicide by any players’ standard. The Vasco attack pounced on the opportunity like a piranha seeking its prey in the Amazon. A beautiful ball through and the attacker had the initiative. With calm and control he slotted the ball past Barthez.

The KPMG third goal was once again set up by a budding young Hegarty. As Vince played the ball through to Thomas, who beat the offside trap (for once) once again saw the free Courtney in the box. With the outside of his boot he lifted the ball into the path of the Bear. As said previously the Bear doesn’t miss many of these. And that was the truth on this occasion. Three one up and KPMG were in control.

Just before half time KPMG had a scare as Vasco had a ball in the net only to be disallowed for handball. Barthez and Dazza both let go a sigh of relief as a breakdown in communication occurred between the two.

At half time KPMG went in two goals to the good but as before they were hungry for more. The second half started brighter for the KPMG players as chances went a begging.  But this was soon to be put in its place by Kennedy.  Yet another set piece, I think, was the cause of this goal. The ball was flighted into the penalty area by Tony Lyons. With a comedy of errors from the Vasco defence the ball remained in the danger area. Who was on the end of it? Kennedy of course but this was a goal with a difference. Over the last two days Briano Wanchope has been doing head strengthening exercises so he can assure himself that his head won’t smash on impact with the football. All this extra work paid dividends as Briano scored with his head. Yes his head Can you believe that????

Vasco scared the KPMG camp as they pulled another one back midway through the second half. A silly free was conceded just outside the KPMG penalty area. With lazy defending the KPMG defence were half asleep when the ball was crossed in. Who got on the end of the cross? None other than the smallest man on the pitch and like Giggs header against Coventry the ball looped over the KPMG keeper.

For the final goal young Brendan Hegarty delivered Tony a beautiful ball into the box. With control seen on the pitches of the San Siro Tony blasted the ball past the Vasco keeper. This is Tony’s 5th goal of the campaign but I’m sure he can’t catch Courtney. Lyons had another attempt saved as the Vasco keeper made a miraculous stop on to the post from Lyons’ 30-yard dipping, swerving shot.

The Vasco keeper made another good save near the final whistle but he could have done with those saves earlier on. That wasn’t the end of the scoring though for the KPMG lads. The last goal was one of pure class. As Barthez got the ball in the penalty area he heard the HORSE hee-hawing down the right wing. With quick think Gregson throw the ball into the path of Lyons. He spotted Briano down the left and with an inch perfect pass found Wanchope. Wanchope took on a few Vasco defenders before crossing to Brendan Hegarty. With precision finishing Hegarty number 4 slotted the ball low into the bottom corner.

A great victory for KPMG that was well deserved. They dominated the game from the outset and played “attractive” football throughout the game.
