KPMG FC 2 – 2 FLG’s With KPMG missing their regular support of Gregson’s Dad on the sideline,
this was a chance for KPMG to prove he wasn’t their lucky mascot. This game
had it all excitement, goals, brilliant goalkeeping and near misses. The early chance of the game fell to FLG who played attractive
football. They split the KPMG defence and with a thunderous right foot fired
the forward blasted a shot to Gregson’s right. It looked in all the way but
the “safe” hands of Gregson, who celebrates his 20th birthday
today, March 29th, steered the ball around the post and out for a
corner. This save would prove to have a major factor in the first goal of the
game as FLG scored from the resulting corner. The ball was knocked on from
the near post and with the easiest of headers the FLG midfielder glanced the
ball in to the back of the net. KPMG thought they got that all-important equalizer but didn’t to find
the FLG keeper in as good form as their own. Man of the match, Tony Lyons,
got the ball outside the FLG penalty area and with Zidane like control and
touch riffled a shot towards the top corner. It was destined for the net but
miraculously the FLG keeper was able to tip it over the bar. As the half time whistle blew KPMG felt that they deserved something
out of the game and you know what? They did. The second half started much brighter for KPMG who had a good
percentage of the possession. But with KPMG pushing forward the counter
attack was always on the cards. The ball was played down the right wing and
the FLG forward got his way to KPMG’s by-line. A strange choice of play came
next as he passed the ball towards the KPMG goal area. Declan Hegarty swung
violently at the ball with his right boot and steered the ball past the
bewildered KPMG keeper. Two down but still not out. KPMG’s next chance of the game came from a free kick just outside the
FLG area. With 4 in the wall this didn’t put Tony Zidane under any more
pressure. With that right boot he curled the free kick up and over the wall.
Heading for the top corner, KPMG were going to get back into this game. But
wait the ball crashes off the crossbar and over for a goal kick. Lyons in
agony, wondering what he has to do to score. Lyon’s finally got his breakthrough midway through the second half. A
thunderous shot from outside the area deflected off a FLG defender and
through their keepers’ legs. An own goal? No one was going to tell the Horse
this. With one goal back KPMG weren’t going to give up now. A free kick from 35 yards out was the next near miss for KPMG. Lyons,
who was everywhere on the night, tried his luck in lobbing the keeper. Lyon’s
quick thinking and vision caught the keeper off his line and decided it was
worth a crack. Once again the FLG keeper proved to be the stone that broke
KPMG’s back. He was in superb form. KPMG were reduced to 10 men as their veteran defender, Tango, was sent
off dangerous tackling. He was re-entered in the game for the last few minutes and this proved
vital if KPMG were to squeeze out a result. With an obstruction in the FLG
area an indirect free kick was the decision of the referee. Whilst
obstructing Thomas Hegarty the FLG’s inspirational keeper was injured. He was
sidelined for the free kick. This was perfect for KPMG, who took full
advantage of this. Tony Zidane rolled the free to the 2nd Vinnie. Vinnie
forced the FLG stand-in keeper to make a save and this is what he did. The
ball was parried away but only to the feet of Declan Hegarty. Making up for
his earlier error he smashed the ball into the roof of the FLG net. The KPMG
players went ballistic. It was the last kick of the game and the comeback
kings were at it again. |
