KPMG FC 1 – 0 Barrys St Germain

The good mood for this match was set prior to kick-off when Mr Gregson aka Gregson’s Dad took a team photo with the recently won shield. Barrys set the early pace as they tried to split the KPMG defense. But as per usual the two centre backs of Dazza and Decky proved to be equal to the task.

Tango gave another solid performance and this man has a bright future in front of him if he continues to perform week in week out. There was one weak link in the defense and this came in the form of Liam. He may not be a Bolton fan but he is certainly a Wanderer and it was his antics that nearly proved costly down the right side.

KPMG’s BACK FOUR

Mark “Tango” Tangney, Declan “Denis” Hegarty,

Darren “Carlos” Mc Grath, Anyone who turns up

The first chance of the game fell to Brendan Hegarty. It wasn’t an easy chance but you’d expect this youngster to put the ball away from 6 yards. A beautiful cross from Tony Lyons off a corner was sent directly into the danger area. Brendan rose above the defenders but with a weak header put the ball straight into the keeper’s hands.

The goal came midway through the first half with great link up work between the KPMG forwards. Courtney received the ball at the edge of the Barry’s area. With skill not seen since the days of Patsy Frame down the Cross, Courtney played an inch perfect pass to Thomas. This in form striker turned the Barry’s defence inside out with his wizardry. And from 14 yards out slotted the ball into the bottom right corner with the simplest of ease. It just shows how good a team KPMG are as they hadn’t had much possession up to now but can still grind out opportunities.

These two linked up well again to create another chance near the end of the half. The Tank played a great ball to the feet of Courtney. With only the keeper to beat the Bear blew the ball low and wide. Some might say that he forgot to take his golf shoes off on his return home but our opinion is that he’s feeling the pressure of Hegarty on his neck for the golden boot.

The first half came to an end in a fitting way. Barry’s swung a corner in to the danger area. Barthez called and collected the ball with the greatest of ease. Surely now he has silenced the critics who have said he wasn’t much of a cross expert. Not talking about anyone in particular…HORSE.

The second half was won of chances missed rather than taken. KPMG created brilliant opportunities to put the game beyond Barry’s reach. But for one man, Courtney, the net was almost as difficult to find as a women on a Saturday night.

The first of these came when Brendan Hegarty’s skill was mind boggling down the left wing. He saw Courtney in the centre and instead of trying to beat the last man (a rare thing that it is) he decided to cross the ball. The ball came at a perfect height for Courtney who, instead of controlling it and then firing a rocket of a shot tried the spectacular. His technique for the volley was awful. I vaguely remember seeing similar poor technique while at an Everton training session. Maybe Courtney saw this too. His shot was atrocious and fell safely into the keepers gloves.

The next opportunity, and lets be fair to Hughie, fell to Brendan. Thomas the youngsters’ brother fired the ball across the box, 5 yards out and my Nan would of scored, correction my great Nan would have scored but not young Hegarty. Not saying the other Hegarty’s aren’t young but they are getting on a bit. Brendan blazed the ball wide.

The next and final chance of the game fell to Hughie again. This time, a quick ball by Barthez to Tony set up the chance. Tony flicked the ball high and into the Barry’s defence. Courtney controlled magically but from 15 yards out couldn’t even hit the target. It’s unusual to see this poor display from an International but we’ve all seen Andy Cole in a white shirt. Yes crap.

The game finally blew the whistle for full time and KPMG were happy with the 3 points. One final thing to add about this game is that when play is continued for about 2 minutes and finally stopped for a foul when does the referee suddenly decide to give a throw that should have taken place 2 minutes before hand. Never I hear you say. Then tonight’s referee should go back into the training.
