KPMG FC 2 – 1 Woodies Wanderers Out played?
Maybe, Out classed? Definitely, Out of the cup? Definitely NOT. After a long
hard season in the Nightowls Division 2 KPMG seemed to have lost their edge
on teams as the season closes on. I decided to try
an experiment when I went home and found that watching paint dry was a little
more exciting than some of KPMG’s play in the game. Their final ball passing
and quick thinking on the ball were clearly lacking throughout. KPMG were
told on Monday that their NUMBER 1 goalkeeper David Barthez Gregson
was unable to play the quarterfinal match tonight. Well who could fill his
boots? His father of course. Woodies had all
the possession in the first half but just couldn’t seem to create that one
opportunity to get the opener. Against the run of play the Horse picked up
the ball in midfield. He saw Courtney waiting anxiously by the offside line
for a clinical pass. He received a brilliant ball from Lyons. The keeper was
late to react to this crucial attack. Hughie, who is
KPMG’s top scorer, scooped the ball up and over the Woodies keeper. The
celebrations were great to see as the team knew their dreams of a place in
the semi-finals were within 40 minutes. It must be said
that Gregson had a great game and commanded is box in the manner Hitler
commanded Germany. Yes that’s right with a scaring, overpowering voice. Niall
Barrett sounds as quiet as a mouse in comparison to the 2nd great
Gregson keeper. Woodies found
their breakthrough near the end of the first half. The ball was played
through the heart of the KPMG defense. KPMG’s schoolboy attempt of an offside
trap failed on this occasion and left their striker one on one with Gregson
Snr. With pace and finishing worthy of the Nationwide Leagues, Ruairí Ó
Muruchú, slotted the ball under the out coming Gregson. Disappointment on
every KPMG face but delight and happiness on the faces of Woodies. Most of the
action that was witnessed in the second half was that of the Woodies keeper
getting the ball after another wide shot from Hugh Courtney. Except
for the goal he scored Courtney couldn’t have put the ball into an empty net
from 10 yards. Countless times Hega or the Horse released him down the right.
But each time he drifted in towards goal a feeble attempt meant another
missed opportunity for KPMG to stretch their lead. C’mon Courtney get those
boots on for the next game. The deciding
goal of the game was a bizarre one to say the least. KPMG got themselves a free-kick
about 25-30 yards outside the Woodies goal. Vince decided to try his luck
with this effort as the Horse hadn’t had much luck yet. Vince drilled the
ball low and hard and with a deflection off Brendan Hegarty, flew into the
bottom left corner of the goal. Cheers went up from the KPMg camp but anger
towards the Woodies keeper was being lashed out from the Woodies bench. KPMG
didn’t care. They were in the semi finals. |
