KPMG FC 1 – 1 Liathroidí Rovers

With the likes of Hega, Tango, Paulo, Barthez, Huggie Bear and all the other KPMG players it was like the whose who of Nightowls football on the pitch last night. The superstars of the game were out in force for the first game of the season.

The early pressure of the game was piled on by Rovers but the KPMG defense was equal to everything that was played into the danger area. Last season Liam was known as the “Wanderer” but in this game he had what can only be described as a rock solid performance. The concentration levels of the defense were that of an Olympian.

The first chance of the game fell to the tall forward of Rovers. A class ball was played over the top and beat the usually excellent offside trap of KPMG. The Rovers attacker latched on to the through ball first time and volleyed the ball with perfect execution. The ball flew past Barthez, who knows his angles, only to go inches wide.

KPMG were the first to score in this game and came from the best move of the game. The ball was played to the feet of Courtney. With expert vision and awareness he spotted the Tank, Thomas Hegarty, on the move. Tomas made a diagonal run that had the Rovers defense bedazzled. As the ball came into the path of The Tank he caught the shot with perfect timing. From about 20 yards out he rifled a shot that would have beaten the best. The ball crashed into the back of the net and was met with a crescendo of noise from the KPMG squad.

The KPMG luck seemed to change with the arrival of Niallo Barrett. The man donned in his familiar manager like trench coat seemed to put KPMG’s concentration off a little. Never the less the half time whistle blew and KPMG went in at half time one goal to the good.

The second half was all about withstanding the pressure and the lack of communications. Rovers created all the early play. But to their dismay they were unable to conjure up any real chances due to the superb offside traps laid down by the KPMG defense.

A scary moment for KPMG came when a lack of communication between defender and keeper. With one saying AWAY and the other saying KEEPER. To their luck Rovers were unable to capitalise on this, potentially suicidal, error.

Rovers finally got the equalizer about 10 minutes from the end. Quick and imaginative play saw them beat the offside trap for the first time in the game. The ball fell for the Rovers striker who first time fired a low ball into the back out the net. Disappointed but not dejected KPMG tried continuously to pile on the pressure. A brilliant shot from Vince saw his effort go inches wide of the upright.

Finally the whistle was blown and KPMG felt that they had lost a point rather than gaining two. The only good news that can be taken is that Mr Gregson will be returning for the next epic battle against Motorworld, one of KPMG’s greatest rivals.
