KPMG FC 3 – 1 PM 1979 At last KPMG got
the win they have been looking for all season and it’s all down to two men.
The goalkeeping magic by Gregson and their new signing Cossy. KPMG were up
against strugglers and bottom of the league PM 1979. The early play was
shared by both teams with neither creating a clear-cut chance. The first
chance of the game came for PM 1979. The ball was played down the left, where
they seemed to think the best root to goal was. The ball was played into the
danger area only to see Gregson tip the ball on to the upright and cleared
away by Tony. The first chance
for KPMG fell to new boy Cossy. He picked the ball up from the edge of the
area and with a thunderous shot, on the half volley, forced to PM keeper to
make a good save. An early scare for
Gregson in goal was when the ball was played in to him, and with the ball
spinning was always going to be difficult to hold on to. The ball spun out of
Gregson’s fingertips but he got down well to save more embarrassment that he
suffered last week. KPMG’s goal came
from the classic Wimbledon strategy. The long ball from Hega was the decisive
moment in the game. Young Brendan rose well but failed to connect. Instead
the ball fell to Courtney. Still with bucket loads to do the former
international showed why he was picked for that side. He later showed why he
hasn’t played since. Courtney was one on one with the keeper. With coolness
that would satisfy any freezer, Courtney slotted the ball home for the
opener. Prior to the
came Courtney showed his modesty by saying he’s going to be red hot on the
pitch and he certainly showed it in the first half. The last chance
of the first half fell for the Horse. But finding the target for the horse
was that similar to a blind man finding money on the street. That’s right…..IMPOSSIBLE.
But you can’t blame a guy for trying. The second half
started much the same but PM seemed to have a new lease of life (check the
half time water me thinks). They attacked with determination at every
opportunity. They finally got their breakthrough. The usual missed timed
header from the Hega call released the striker into the danger area. With
precision and excellence the PM striker glanced the ball passed the KPMG
keeper. Owen “Becks”
Twomey made a return for the first time in months due to a problem with his
right shoulder. Two much of the old 5-knuckle shuffle is one of the rumours
escalating amongst the media. Twomeys return would turn out disastrous as he
gave away a penalty mid way through the first half. If they score the game becomes very
difficult for KPMG. The Horse pleads with Barthez to stand in goal but
quietly confident Gregson’s tell him where to go. After studying videos of
previous PM games, Barthez knows this players mind inside out. The midfielder
struck the ball low and to the keepers left. It must be a goal. Surely no
keeper in the world can get to that. But wait..Barthez saves miraculously
(see animation above). Barthez gets up smiles at the Horse and plays the ball
up field. KPMG kept
pressing forward and eventually got a corner for their troubles. Another new
arrival for the squad, Caddick, decided to float one in with his million
dollar left foot. The ball was played exactly where he wanted and up raised
Cossy. With the power of a bullet from a gun the ball smacked into the back
of the net. The PM players
didn’t give up the pushed forward looking for that elusive equaliser but to
their dismay the found Barthez in sparkling form. Unbeatable was won of the
words that he was described as (not including the goal of course). The final attack
of the game was one of pure magic. Cossy got the ball from midfield and went
on a Maradonna like run. Twisting and turning he made mince meat of the PM
defence. With just one player to beat, the goalkeeper, Cossy made it look all
so simple. He side footed the ball into the back of the net for the victory.
KPMG went ballistic. A gritty
performance by KPMG that forced their first victory in the 2001/2002
campaign. With more of the regulars due back from international duty soon the
team should feel very confident going in to their next match. |
