KPMG FC 3 – 0 AIB (Cork)

Three wins in a row, and KPMG are heading in the right direction in the table. But for the first half the win seemed a bit of a struggle.

The early play and attractive football was played by the bank. They used both wings to great effect and pressed forward with every chance to try and get the opener. They created bundles of chances early on but all came from corners, which in truth were dangerous.

The first clear-cut chance of the game fell for the bank 10 yards out. The corner came swinging into the danger area. The defense failed to clear the ball and it fell to the feet of the banks forward. With his right boot his fired the ball towards goal. The ball came back out to him after a fine stop by Barthez. With reflex reaction he once again took aim at goal. But to his utmost disbelief he found the out stretched leg of Tango. He may never of scored or assisted in a goal but that save was to prove vital.

The first chance KPMG had was from a Briano free kick. Floated in with pin point accuracy only to be clutched away from the head of Courtney.

Courtney did get his revenge. Mid way through the first half the long ball tactic, often and only used by Hega, worked like a charm. The ball fell high into the danger area. Courtney rose to meet the ball but the keeper was first to make contact. Unfortunately for the bank the keeper punched the ball off Courtney’s head and straight into the bac of the net.

A few close chances came KPMG’s way in the second half but none of their good play paid off.

The next near miss of the first half was due to a solo run by Brendan. He danced his way through the bank defense and just as he was about to pull the trigger he saw the ball taken from under him. The ball was kicked just inches wide and out for a corner.

The corner was a cracker. Dazza floated the ball in beautifully. Up rose Briano and headed the ball down towards goal. Like a train, Declan Hegarty, blasted his way through the defense. With one hoof of his right boot, he smashed the ball into the top corner of the net. His celebration was that worthy of any lottery winner.

The Bank pressed forward again but failed to trouble the KPMG defense, not to say their keeper. The next chance of the game was a beautifully worked attack. The ball was played to the feet of Thomas the Tank. With that killer touch and magic he played the ball through for Courtney. Courtney, who is the best form of his career, took one touch and coolly slotted the ball home for what was to be the nail in the coffin for the Bank.

Three goals up and KPMG were hungry for more. A mistake at the back sent The Tank through. His shot came back off the Banks keeper and into the feet of Courtney. He rounded the ball and only had to slot it home. But Courtney never expected to find Kate Moss (the post) in the way. The ball crashed off the post and out for a goal kick. (See animation below)  Did I say he was in good form…. I meant OK form.

All in all a good solid performance from KPMG and this game should increase the team spirit and confidence even more.
