KPMG
FC 4 – 1 Rob Roy This match was
played as if it were in the peaks of Alaska but in a matter of fact it was
the hills of Harlequins. The game was called off early due to the Rob Roy
keeper claiming the pitch was too dangerous. This was rubbish cause the only
danger on the pitch wasn’t the snow but the shooting boots of Hughie
Courtney. (Artists Impression of pitch and players Left: Briano, right: Barthez) The first half
started very promising for the KPMG side with great opportunities being created
from the middle of the park. The first chance fell to Hat-trick Hughie. The
ball was played perfectly to his feet but the chance was squandered. The first goal of the game came from a
beautiful move from the centre of the pitch. The ball was threaded through
the heart of Rob Roys defence by Briano for Hughie to pounce on. His first
shot careered off the keeper but with Lady Luck on his side Hughie got a
second chance. Like the preying vulture that he is Hughie cracked the ball
past the stranded keeper to put the Accountants in the lead. A second goal
was on the cards when Tony Horse picked up the ball on the edge of Rob Roy’s
area. But being a keeper, it was natural for the young Kerryman to blast the
ball wide. The second goal
of the game had great movement and pace. Rob Roy made a darting run down the
by-line. The ball was played into the feet of their winger who whipped in a
beautifully floated ball. The Rob Roy attacker out-jumped the KPMG defence as
if he were on a trampoline to glance a header past the out of position
Barthez. Disappointing for KPMG to let a lead slip but their fighting spirit
is that of Mike Tyson. The snow was
thundering down by the bucket-load halfway through the first half. This didn’t
stop the KPMG attack from slowing down. A majestic build up in the midfield
area created the third goal. A cushioned header by Vince to Tony Horse was
just the beginning. He then controlled it expertly and played n inch perfect
pass over the top of Rob Roy’s defence. Hughie, being the quickest to react,
latched on to the pass and looped it over the out-stretched keeper. Two goals
weren’t enough for KPMG in the first half. They were hungry for more, and
more they got. The third goal of the game came from none other than Briano.
With the blizzard the goal was hard to see but I’ll give it a whirl. Courtney
played the ball into the danger area. With Briano waiting to pounce in the
centre there was no-one going to stop this Le Tissier like forward from adding
to his goal tally. And they didn’t. He finished as coolly as a cucumber or as
the snow on the pitch. The second half
started brightly again for the office boys who dominated the possession in
all areas of the park. But the players were getting complacent, naturally
being two goals to the good and all, but they let a Rob Roy winger through to
the by-line. He snapped at the ball but this was parried away by Barthez. The
corner resulted in no opportunity for Rob Roy who weren’t really on song
tonight. During some patches of the game it was clear to see why they are
bottom of the league. The fourth goal
was really due to the vision and awareness of Tony Lyons. He say an opening
in the Rob Roy defence and with an international of strength and pace upfront
he knew that if he played a perfectly weighted pass an scoring chance would
avail. He was right. Hughie controlled it beautifully with his right instep
and only needed a few touches to get his sights set on making it a hat trick. With one foul swoop of his right leg the
ball didn’t fly passed the keeper, it rocketed passed him. The keeper was
left defenceless. Soon after the
fourth goal the game was conceded by Rob Roy. Although a lot of the players
wanted to continue, the referee had the last say. A great game for the one
spectator and one sub but enjoyed greatly by both sets of players. |
