KPMG FC 4 – 0 Woodies Wanderers

This match was all about the KPMG FC team. I stress team because this is the first game that the side in blue and navy played as a team. There was no, on this occasion, single player standing out with a spectacular performance. It was the team performance that was spectacular.

Prior to the kick off it was suggested that a 4-3-3 system be put into place and well the result speaks for itself. The first chance of the game fell for Ruairí O’ Murichú who split the KPMG defence but only to have his goal disallowed for a rash challenge on the KPMG keeper.

The first goal of the game wasn’t typical of a KPMG goal. The usual long ball tactic was thrown out the window and playing through the midfield was the order of the day. A beautiful, patient build up made room for Darren Mc Grath in the centre of the park. The ever-present Briano made a perfectly timed diagonal run that confused the Woodies defence. The ball played through was sublime and with a striker of the calibre of Briano a goal was always on the cards. And a goal it was. Briano who calmly slotted in the opener past the Woodies keeper kept a cool head.

Woodies had an opportunity late on in the second half as Murichú slipped in behind the KPMG defence. His swerving low shot was deflected away to safety by the feet of Gregson. A difficult save made look so simple.

The second half started with a comedy of errors for KPMG. The kick off was that of a schoolboy game. The ball was played into the feet of a Woodies player who tried creating an opening but failed as he met Slasher on the left wing.

The second goal of the game was one of beauty. Vince picked up the ball in the middle of the park. With his strength he battled his way through the midfield. With trickery associated with Edgar Davids he produced a clinical pass to Thomas. Thomas’s quick thinking soccer brain was the defining touch. He lifted the ball over the arm flapping Woodies keeper. 2 – 0. KPMG were really on top at this stage. Playing football was all new to them but they liked it.

A few harmless shots from outside the area were the best Woodies could create. These shots aren’t going to test the leagues best.

The third goal was a cracker. Poetry in motion. Lyons who saw the free Harrington just in front of him generated the move. Vince took one look up, saw the keeper off his line and whack. From 30 – 40 yards out the ball travelled like a speeding bullet. With pace and dip on the ball this shot was like a comet firing through the night sky. No keeper in the world (except one) could have possibly kept it out. The ball rocketed into the top corner. A goal for scrapbook!

The game was over now but Woodies pushed on. A great save by Gregson stopped them from getting a conciliation goal. He wasn’t going to be beaten on his near post again.

The final goal, and KPMG’s fourth game from a bizarre incident down the left wing. Daren “Dazza” Mc Grath, with his incredible throws, launched one in to the Woodies box. The ball travelling a speed clipped a defender on the leg and deflected the ball in to his own net. Darren after the match claimed that ball was going in to the bottom corner if the defender hadn’t touched it. A majority decision let him have the goal to add to his tally. A total of one.

The final whistle blew and KPMG can be very proud of their workman like performance. This result has set them in good stead for the remaining games.
