The  Origins of  Rathmines

The name ' Rathmines' originated in the family of de Moens who came into possession of what was referred to as 'The Rath' in the 14th century. In 1382 The Rath was held by William de Moens, who styled himself  Lord of Meonesrath. At some time the name was inverted to become 'Rathmines'.In early times the area was probably heavily  wooded and much of it would have been part of Cullenswood.  In the 17th century, Sir George Radcliff built a great mansion in Rathmines.  It's value was estimated  at £,7000 a huge sum in those days.  They then moved into Dublin and three days after they left, the house was burned.  The house was later restored.
