1st February

St. Brigids Day

The first of February is St. Brigids Day. St. Brigid is one of Irelands best loved saints. She was born in 451 near Dundalk. She was the daughter of a rich chieftain. All she ever wanted was to look after the sick and the poor. Saint Brigid travelled all over setting up convents. Many girls came to join her. These nuns including Brigid worked very hard. Many stories are told about Brigid but in every story we are told aboutb her kindness and the help she gave to others. Today, people still use a cross of reeds like Brigid. It is known as St. Brigids Cross.

2nd February

Groundhog Day

Last Friday the 2nd of February was Ground Hog Day . In Puxataney in America , a groundhog called Puxataney Phil gives his annual weather forecast. Phil comes out of hibernation on the 2nd of February. If he comes out and sees his shadow it means 6 more weeks of Winter. If Phil sees no shadow, Winter is over. Unfortunately, Phil saw his shadow last Friday. We should not worry too much because he is right less than half of the time. This custom has been going on for over 200 years. The groundhog looks like a beaver.

Kevins Story

On Monday the 12th of February, we went to see a play in the Watergate Theatre. It was called Kevins Story. It was about a boy called Kevin and the trouble that his daydreams got him into. People called him crazy and stupid because of the way he acted. Kevin learned that he wasn't silly and that it was okay to be himself. He learned ways of showing off. He didn't care what others said. He was to be Kevin and his daydreams didn't always get him into trouble.

"I really liked this play alot. I liked it because it was funny" Jack, 2nd Class
