Second Class: Mr Weadick

May Day 2001

Our May Day topic this year was "Listening to the voice of Refugees". Our class was visited by some people from different countries who are now refugees here.

In the last few years there has been a huge influx of people from other countries .These people are called refugees and they have come to Ireland looking for help They come mainly from Africa but also from places like Romania They have to leave their own countries because of war and famine. They bring with them many different skills and talents but unfortunately they are not allowed to work in Ireland. Most refugees live in hostels with little to keep them busy. In the last couple of weeks some people from Africa visited us in class. They taught us some songs as they are great singers and musicians. We welcomed them in our own language and by saying Karibu Ngeni. That is in KiSwahili which is spoken in parts of Africa.

Here are some of the animals that live in Africa
We learned how to say the names of these animals in KiSwahili.

Twiga means giraffe.

Temba means elephant.
