Legal Developments

Des Crofton from the NARGC told me to get this article and read it. I think everyone needs to know about this. Show it to everyone you know who shoots. Excerpt from Farmers Journal Febraury 26th, page 28. The Gamekeeper (a column written by the NARGC) today had the following to say:

"The Gamekeeper has been aware for some considerable time, as has the NARGC, of a considerable number of problems in firearms licensing by some members of An Garda Siochana, despite High and Supreme Court decisions which have profound implications as to how firearms licensing is to be administered. There has been some inconsistent behaviour by Gardai in licensing matters recorded over the last two ears which bear scrutiny. All of the incidents are known to have one thing in common - gardai are acting outside their sphere of their authority as laid down in the Firearms Acts. The obvious victims of these inconsistencies are naturally the law-abiding citizens trying to go about their business. The NARGC have resolved to bring this unacceptable behaviour to an end by exposing it wherever we find it. As of now, we are launching a Garda League where we will publish the performance of the different Garda Divisions on firearms licensing matters. Remember, firearms licensing is a public service and should be administered with the same efficiency and courtesy as any other licensing system such as car tax, motor licenses, TV licenses etc. Delays of two, three or four months and longer is simply inexcusable in processing a firearms license application. Let the Gamekeeper or the NARGC know if you have had a less than acceptable experience in relation to unreasonable delay, unacceptable manners, asking to make the application again when a first application has not been determined, loss of application etc."

Insurance Update

Speaking of Des Crofton, he recently informed me that as of Autumn 2005 the NARGC will be in a position to insure target rifle and handgun useage. Great news for us! At that point we envisage making them our preferred and recommended insurance providers in place of the current Countryside Alliance coverage which our members are using at the moment due mainly to lack of a credible alternative. As you can see from the above article, the NARGC are doing tremendous work in the area of defending the sport from attack on all fronts. They deserve the support of the shooting community. Talk to your local gunclub members about joining up.

Security Matters

The Kerry Target Sports Club is currently advising it's members and the shooting community at large to consider keeping your rifles securely and separately from their bolts. This ensures that even, god forbid, theives do actually manage to break into your house and your gunsafe, the firearms are useless without the bolts and makes it very unworkable for the criminal element to sell them on. This helps keep stolen guns from ending up being used in criminal activities and increases your chances of being able to get re-licenced by your local Superintendent if you can prove that you have taken every foreseeable measure to prevent their theft.
