Lahardane on song in one-sided replay

Lahardane, rapidly emerging as a football power base in North Mayo, particularly at under-age level, displayed class and scoring skill in plunging Kiltimagh to a sixteen points defeat in the county under-16 ‘B’ semi final replay at Knockmore last Tuesday evening.

Lahardane now meet Kilmaine in the final at Breaffy this evening (7 p.m. Tuesday).

The only period of control enjoyed by the East Mayo champions was confined to the opening two minutes, when Johnny Murtagh and Noel Lydon had points, but from then on the Nephinsiders were calling all the shots.

The winners had a number of fine individual performances, particularly Mervyn Marley at centre half-back; Kenny Burke and Brian Rowland at midfield and Paul Jordan and Cormac Rowland in attack.

The Kiltimagh defence simply had no answer to the creativeness of the North Mayo champions attack where Cormac Rowland turned in a superb game, displaying great scoring skill both from play and frees.

By the 10th minute Lahardane had drawn level and then came a succession of points by Cormac Rowland and Brian Rowland and a goal by Paul Jordan to leave the victors enjoying a 1-8 to 0-3 advantage at the interval.

Lahardane apparently were in no mood to let their opponents back into the game in the second period. Indeed by the end of the third quarter the gap had widened to fifteen points before Brian Rowland rammed home the winners second goal near the end.

The Kiltimagh attack were always under a tight rein and it was left to the skillful place-kicking of Noel Lydon to land scores at very irregular intervals.
