La Leche League of Ireland Annual Conference

The Arklow Bay Hotel, Arklow, Co. Wicklow.

28th and 29th February, 2004

Internationally renowned speaker, Molly Pessl will give the keynote address entitled Getting Breastfeeding Started With Evidence Based Care at the forthcoming La Leche League of Ireland Conference.  An expert in the field of lactation, Molly Pessl is a registered nurse, childbirth educator and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Over the past 18 years, Molly has developed an extensive education and clinical program at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center.  She has contributed to the growth of Evergreen Hospital from a small rural hospital to one of the largest single room maternity centers in the US. In addition, Evergreen has been awarded the first US designation of “Baby Friendly” by UNICEF and the World Health Organization. Molly is a past president of the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners and a retired La Leche League Leader.

Molly will also give a talk entitled Introducing Solids. In view of the recent Department of Health recommendation that babies be exclusively breastfed for six months, this talk will be of particular interest. Molly will explain the reasons behind this important policy statement.

Jo Murphy Lawless, sociologist in Trinity College Dublin and author of “Reading Birth and Death; a History of Obstetric Thinking,” will present a session entitled Birth – What Women Want.

Geraldine Lynch will represent Rainbow as one of the speakers focusing on Helping Children Deal with Life Changes.  The Yin Yang of Parenting will be discussed by Suzie and Michael Cahn.  Cindy Dring will present Under the Influence of Advertising.

Those attending the Conference will have the opportunity to listen to and join the discussion on such topics as children’s education, healthy foods and playful parenting.

The keynote address and many other sessions will be of interest to Health Professionals who can register for continuing education recognition points (CERPS) as the conference has been granted Category1 course approval by An Bord Altranais.

Included in the weekend’s activities is a get together on Friday night 27th February, Fathers Sessions, Teen Sessions, Playgroup Facilities for 4-7yr olds (under 4‘s can attend with an adult or teen) and Activities for 8-12 year olds.
