Ballina All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil 1998
28th, 29th, 30th of August, 1998.
Last year 170,000 people visited Ballina, Co. Mayo, Ireland for this event. It is Ireland's showpiece of Traditional Irish Music, Song and Dance which attracts national and international media coverage, including Japenese T.V. and Sky. Hundred's of competitions are held in 17 venues throughout the town. Music is played on the street's and in the pubs, hotels and alleyways of the town. An open air ceilí is held in the town square from 3 to 6 pm on the Saturday and the Sunday. Night Ceilithe are held in halls during the festival. Cultural Exhibitions and historical pageantry are open to the public. This year, known as the Year of the French, the Fleadh Cheoil opens with a pageant based on the 1798 French landing at Kilcummin. The weekend festival's closing ceremony includes a spectacular fireworks display.
Scoil Éigse is held the week prior to the Fleadh Cheoil.
