COLLEGE BULLETIN
Vol
16 Oct.
No. 2 2001
Mid-Term
The mid-term break will begin with an extra celebration on
Friday October 26th with the wedding of one of our esteemed colleagues
Ms. Oonagh McCaul we wish her and her husband to be Michael and
the many staff who will be celebrating their nuptials a most joyous
and enjoyable day. The college will close for mid-term at 12.45
on Friday and reopen for class on Monday November 5th at 9.00a.m.
Can we take this further opportunity at the mere mention of Halloween
to say "think safety first". Parents should know where
their sons are and know what they are doing and to urge them to
think safety at all times. Otherwise we wish parents, students and
staff a most enjoyable Halloween break.
Musical
Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
The Marian College Drama society is now in its 29th year and this
year the College will perform Joseph in early December, 5th - 7th
to be exact. Showtime is approaching and rehearsals are in full
swing. The part of Joseph will be played by Kelan Lowry O'Reilly.(7TH
year) with Joseph Murray of 1st year as his understudy, Michael
Hilliard plays the Pharoah, illustrating once again that Elvis is
not dead, but just taking a break in Egypt. More details next month.

Sports
Roundup
Senior
Cup Rugby
Commenced with a series of friendlies but due to disruption
caused by injuries unavailability and clashes with other sports
has yet to register a victory. Well done and thanks to the Under
16 players who have helped out, Lee Tormey, Ian O'Neill, Stephen
Lawless, Kieran Browne and Paul Kelly who have come in and deputised
superbly well. Captain Graeme Glennon and pack leader Tom Fitzpatrick
have tried to lead by example and things will improve with a full
squad. The Cup draw is eagerly anticipated for the SCT and JCT teams
(Juniors remain unbeaten and first years look forward to their first
match on Wednesday).
Senior
Soccer
The competitive season began with an inauspicious start against
an excellent Blackrock College side. Despite sterling performances
from Colin Boland, Stephen Ryan and Ricky Joyce Marian lost 4.0.
Training paid dividends for the next match because two superb goals
by Ricky Joyce and Stephen Ryan saw Marian dispose of St Laurences
but not before Scott Foley and Tony Colgan put in outstanding performances
to keep Marian ahead. D day against St Benildus to see who qualified
for the next stage. St Benildus have been all Ireland champions
at this level and with Marian having to win to qualify it had all
the makings of an up hill struggle. Despite going behind 2.0 urged
on by Mr Cronin and the injured Colin Boland a magnificent 40 yard
chip by Stephen Ryan ensued that Marian went out by the narrowest
of margins. The cup campaign also came to an abrupt and unfortunate
end, despite brave performances by Ian Ryan and Kevin O'Brien, Community
College Athlone winning by 1.0.
Junior
Hurling
Marian College 5-12 St Johns Ballyfermot 3-5
This game was effectively over in the first twenty minutes of the
match as Marian rattled 3 goals and 5 points without reply. Stephen
Cleary, Jorel Kavanagh and Vinny Byrne were to the fore. James Kavanagh
in goal dealt effectively with the DLS attack, backed up by Barry
Hogan, Eugene Byrne and Derek Nicholson. The two O'Neills Ryan and
Ger held midfield and supplied the forwards with good ball.
Marian College 5-4 Lucan Community College 5-12
This was a game Marian could have won but a poor first half left
them with too much to do and despite Graham Hannigan who was outstanding
and man of the match Vinnie Byrne doing their best and some fine
scores from Iain Baker it wasn't enough to bring them back to parity.
Gaelic
Football
Marian have played two matches against Oatlands and Colmcilles
and still they await their first victory. Training is on Thursdays
- those interested see John Scully captain or Ms McCann.
Water
Polo
Great start for the Seniors three wins out of three against Gormanston
and St Josephs home and away. St Vincents await Cathal Bury and
the rest of the squad including newcomers Paul O'Connor and Conor
Wynne and returned squad members Ian Ryan and Damien O'Neill.
Table
Tennis
A large number of enthusiastic players have been involved in
training for the last number of weeks on Mondays at 3.30 to 5.00pm.
Cup and league competitions begin after mid term. Best of luck to
Andy Boland on his selection to represent Ireland in Denmark.
Basketball
Great win for the senior v St. McDara's on a 57 - 30 scoreline
which follows two fine wins against Templeogue and St. Michaels.
Excellent performances from Niall Meany and Karl Jennings and they
now look forward to playing Ard Scoil Ris in the All Ireland Schools
Cup on November 21st. The under 16s recorded a great 38 34 victory
over Patrician College in Newbridge.
Jerseys

I have a new philosophy. I'm only going to dread one day at
a time. Living one day at a time, the present is a reality for us
all.
