Sometimes the coal had to be cut by hand using a pick.

Brushing was the term given to taking away the rock to extend the tunnel.

Arigna Church nestled at the Kilronan mountain foothills.

Gerry has just under cut the coal to this branch using the Anderson coal cutting machine.

In the foreground is an "Airpick" a small jack hammer used instead of a hand pick to cut out the coal.

Two tired elderly miners one using the small carriage "Hutch" used to bring the coal to the surface.

In the background is the pit entrance "Eye" over which you can just see the foot of the Blessed Virgin statue.
