1999 All County Hurling League Division 2A

Final: Ballyfad 3-07 (16) Shelmaliers 2-07 (13)

Ballyfad won the ACHL Division 2A title and promotion to Division 1 after this excellent win over Shelmaliers in Ferns on Sunday July 18th

Both sides took a while to settle down and score-taking in the first half proved difficult as defences were dominant. Shels could only muster 3 points despite having more chances while points from John Hegarty and Seamus Hughes was added to by a Matty Forde goal just before the break. Ballyfad lead 1-2 to 0-3.

The second half proved to be a much more entertaining affair and Ballyfad started on the right note with Matty Forde grabbing his second goal. As Forde added to his personal total Shelmaliers kept with the fight and scored 1-3 themselves before substitute Tommy Boland struck for Ballyfad's third goal and leave some daylight between the teams.

A late Shelmaliers goal wasn't enough to deny Ballyfad and captain Jim Bushe stepped forward to recieve the cup for a delighted Ballyfad.

Gordon Hughes scored Ballyfad's goal just before half-time and the North Wexford team were always in control.

John Hegarty made his first appearance since injuring an ankle and Aodhan Kavanagh made his first appearance of the year. Only 6 of the 1998 Junior A Hurling winning team were on show for Ballyfad.

Ballyafad were unable to field a team in their scheduled ACHL Division 2A match in Fethard on Tuesday June 1st.

4th Round: Ballyfad 2-10 (16) Taghmon-Camross 2-07 (13)

A late goal from Ballyfad's Andrew O'Sullivan proved to be the difference between these 2 sides in an entertaining ACHL Division 2A tie played in perfect conditions in Kilanerin on Saturday May 15th.

Up until that late goal it was very much nip and tuck as Ballyfad were pegged back after leading by 4 points twice in the game. Ballyfad only led at half-time by a point after opening up a 4 point lead early in the half. Jim Bushe was in good scoring form but in general the team relied on individual scores rather than good constructive hurling.

Taghmon were growing in confidence and at half-time looked the better team and after an early Niall Kavanagh point in the second half, they scored the first goal of the game. Ballyfad responded through Micheal Hughes before half-time substitute Tomas Woodbyrne scored 1-1 in quick succession.

However, Taghmon responded with another goal and game was wide open for anyone to win it. Niall Kavanagh and Tomas Woodbyrne scored points only for Taghmon to respond. Then up stepped O'Sullivan to give Ballyfad their first win of the campaign.

3rd Round: Shelmaliers 3-08 (17) Ballyfad 0-05 (05)

Ballyfad slumped to their first hurling defeat of the year after being outclassed by a strong Shelmaliers side in this ACHL Division 2A tie played in Hollymount on Sunday May 2nd.

Shelmaliers took the best of their early chances and after 10 minutes they had scored their 3 goals and led 3-2 to 0-3 at half-time.

Ballyfad, with only 5 of their Junior A final team, took the game more to Shelmaliers after the break conceeding only 6 points while scoring 2 themselves. However, better will be required if they are to feature in the Division.

Ballyfad Team: Enda O'Leary; James Boland, Niall Gethings, Barry Gethings; Andrew O'Sullivan, Michael Higgins; John Gethings (0-1 free); Pat Jones, Paul Murray; Micheal Hughes (Castlelands), Michael Hegarty, Gordon Hughes (0-1); Jim Bushe (capt) (0-1 sideline), Chris Murray, Niall Kavanagh (0-2).

2nd Round: Ballyfad w.o. Geraldine O'Hanrahan's scr.

Ballyfad's second game in the ACHL was initially called off at the last minute after torrential rain made the Sportsfield in Kilanerin unplayable on Sunday April 24th. The re-fixture saw the New Ross side unable to field a team.

1st Round: HWH Bunclody 3-07 (16) Ballyfad 3-07 (16)

A Ballyfad team with only 4 players who started the 1998 Junior A Hurling final last November, did exceptionally well to come away from Bunclody with a point after a very tough ACHL Division 2A clash on Sataurday April 10th.

Only goalkeeper Enda O'leary, midfielder Pat Jones, and forwards Jim Bushe and Tommy Boland were available from that team for this opening game of the 1999 ACHL campaign.

Ballyfad opened up the game excellently and scored 3 goals in the first half. At half-time they led by 6 points 3-3 to 1-3. However, 2 goals in as many minutes for Bunclody early in the second half brought them back into the game and Ballyfad did superbly to hold on for a draw.

Ballyfad Team: Enda O'Leary; Niall Gethings, Stephen Kavanagh, Barry Gethings; Andrew O'Sullivan, Micheal Hughes (Castlelands); John Gethings; Pat Jones, Paul Murray; Jim Bushe (1-1); Michael Hegarty (0-3), Gordon Hughes; Tommy Boland (1-1), Niall Kavanagh (0-2), Donal Noonan.
