1999 Junior A Football Championship

Semi-final:
Kilmore 2-10 (16) Kilanerin 1-07 (10)

Kilanerin's dream of a Senior-Junior double was smashed by an excellent Kilmore team in this exciting Junior A Football Semi-final on Saturday October 16th in St Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy.

The match was effectively settled by Kilmore's second goal scored just after half-time which left 6 points between the sides; a lead that was never relinquished.

One of the most disappointing things about the defeat was that so many of Kilanerin's top performers during the campaign failed to produce their best form on the day. But the game started well with Fintan Kinsella scoring 1-1 after 3 minutes; Kilmore responded witrh 3 points of their own however and a well-taken goal put the South County team ahead 1-3 to 1-1.

Kilmore had most of the play in the first half and but for some woeful shooting the game would have been over at half-time. As it happened Kilanerin kept in touch with Niall Kavanagh and Aodhan Kavanagh points. Half-time score Kilmore 1-6 Kilanerin 1-3.

However, the game was beyond Kilanerin after Kilmore opened up the second half with 1-1 and lead by 6 points. Kilanerin responded with points from Aodhan Kavanagh (2) and the impressive Tommy Boland (1). However, Kilanerin missed a number possible goal chances late on, particularly when Aodhan Kavanagh skied a penalty over the bar. With that the 'double' was gone.

Quarter-final:
Kilanerin 4-09 (21) HWH Bunclody 1-14 (17)

Kilanerin advanced to the Semi-finals of the Junior A Football Championship after this Quarter-final win over HWH Bunclody on Saturday October 9th in St Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy.

The result was always in doubt and this end-to-end game was finally settled by a coolly taken last minute penalty by Kilanerin's Aodhan Kavanagh.

From the very outset the game was going to be high scoring and close. An early scoring burst of 1-1 by Kilanerin - Enda O'Leary with Kilanerin's first goal - was cancelled out by a HWH Bunclody goal dispatched from the penalty spot. The first half went point for point and at half-time the teams were level 1-8 apiece.

However, the game was settled by three second half Kilanerin goals. While Bunclody kept in touch taking some excellent points Kilanerin were able to remain in front after Fintan Kinsella, and Tommy Boland scored two excellent goals; Kinsella's goal finished off after one of the best passing moves of the year involving 6 players.

Tommy Boland's goal came at a crucial time when Bunclody had levelled up the match; Boland superbly blocked down an attempted clearance by the St. Anne's goalkeeper and recovered to blast the ball home. Bunclody then fought back to within a point and hit the post from a late free which would have levelled the scores.

Patrick Jones then cleared the ball off the line when a Bunclody free landed short and KIlanerin recovered to mount a last ditch attack leading to a foul on Enda O'Leary for a penalty. Aodhan Kavanagh had the final say from the spot and KIlanerin were through to the semi-finals.

Team: Eoin Lucey; Niall Gethings, Raymond Kelly, John Gethings (capt); Eddie Fanning, Donnchadha Lucey, Nigel Sheridan; Patrick Jones, Peter Kavanagh (0-3); Tommy Boland (1-0), Brian Hughes, Aodhan Kavanagh (1-4, 1-0 pen, 0-2 frees); Niall Kavanagh (0-1), Fintan Kinsella (1-0), Enda O'Leary (1-0).
Subs: Kevin Hempenstall (0-1) for Raymond Kelly.

2nd Round:
Kilanerin 2-12 (18) St. Anne's (13)

Kilanerin had a great win over St. Anne's in this Second Round Junior A Football Championship match on Saturday October 2nd in Belfield, Enniscorthy.

Played on the day before the County Senior Football Final, the Juniors showed enough evidence that they could complete a memorable Senior-Junior double in 1999. A late second half scoring burst of 6 unanswered points was the key to the win but it was a win fashioned by an excellent defensive display.

Impressive midfielder Pat Jones kicked an early point before referee Lar Doyle had to lead the teams off the field due to a sudden torrentila rain storm. After the restart Kilanerin's Enda O'Leary was set up by Jones for a cooly-taken goal and Kilanerin were 4 points up.

Kilanerin then saw a golden opportunity spurned when a penalty was missed by the normally reliable Kevin Hempenstall after Tommy Boland was tripped. This gave St. Anne's a boost and they came back into the game scoring 4 points to level the scores. A Fintan KInsella point restored the lead before St. Anne's scored their goal; palmed to the net by Pat Power.

However, their lead was short-lived as Kilanerin scored a stunning goal in the 23rd minute. Tommy Boland's good run lead to a pass to Patrick Jones and from 20 yards out the big midfielder put his shot to the top corner of the net. St. Anne's recovered well to score 3 points to lead at half-time by 1 point; 1-8 to 2-4.

Peter Kavanagh and Fintan Kinsella points put Kilanerin back in front after the restart, before St. Anne's were awarded a penalty. For the second time the kick was missed, flying over the bar; but a further point from the Rathangan men put them a point ahead at 1-10 to 2-6.

Kilanerin then proceeded to dominate the rest of the match holding St. Anne's scoreless and scoring 6 points of their own. The midfield partnership of Patrick Jones and Peter Kavanagh proved the difference and points from Aodhan Kavanagh (3), Niall Kavanagh, Fintan KInsella, and Kevin Hempenstall secured victory.

Kilanerin now play HWH Bunclody in the quarter-finals in St. Patrick's Park on Saturday October 9th.

Team: Eoin Lucey; Niall Gethings, Raymond Kelly, John Gethings (capt); Brian Hughes, Donnchadha Lucey, Nigel Sheridan; Patrick Jones (1-1), Peter Kavanagh (0-1); Tommy Boland, Kevin Hempenstall (0-1), Aodhan Kavanagh (0-4, 3 frees); Niall Kavanagh (0-1), Fintan Kinsella (0-4), Enda O'Leary (1-0).

1st Round:
Kilanerin 4-12 (24) Starlights 2-08 (14)

Kilanerin breezed into the Second Round of the Junior A Football Championship with this 10 point victory over Starlights in Gorey on Saturday August 14th.

Kilanerin, missing Tomas Woodbyrne who is out for the year after a cruciate ligament tear, fielded one of the youngest ever teams to play for the club in a championship game; the oldest members of the panel were centre-forward Kevin Hempenstall (27) and corner-forward Niall Kavanagh (23). They were however, able to bring in County minor hurlers Aodhan and Peter Kavanagh and they were the keys to this impressive victory.

Peter Kavanagh lead by example at midfield and Aodhan set out his stall after only 12 seconds as he latched onto a Pat Jones free to crash the ball to the net. Starlights responded with a point only for Aodhan to set up a move involving Tommy Boland and Fintan Kinsella that lead to Enda O'Leary crashing home a second major. After that there was only ever going to be one winner.

Further first half points by Niall Kavanagh (2), Peter Kavanagh (2), Fintan Kinsella, and Tommy Boland were added to by goals from Niall Kavanagh and a second from Enda O'Leary to leave the half-time score 4-6 to 0-4.

Starlights came more into the game in the second half and scored 2-4 but Kilanerin tagged on 0-6 themselves with Peter Kavanagh (3 frees), Tommy Boland, Fintan Kinsella, and substitute Niall Furlong all getting into the act. All in all a good days work, but the future rounds will pose harder tests.

Team: Eoin Lucey; Niall Gethings, Raymond Kelly, John Gethings; Brian Hughes, Donnchadha Lucey, Eddie Fanning; Pat Jones, Peter Kavanagh (0-5, 4 frees); Tommy Boland (0-2), Kevin Hempenstall, Aodhan Kavanagh (1-0); Niall Kavanagh (1-2), Fintan Kinsella (0-2), Enda O'Leary (2-0).
Subs: James Boland for Eddie Fanning; Niall Furlong (0-1) for Tommy Boland; Conor Byrne for Enda O'Leary.
