1995 Wexford Creamery Senior Football FinalKilanerin 1-09 (12) Castletown 0-07 (07) |

It was by no stretch of the imagination a memorable final but for Kilanerin it was a sweet one having regained the title won in 1993 by virtue of this five point victory over neighbours Castletown in a very disappointing and free ridden Wexford Creamery county final at Wexford Park on Sunday October 15th 1995. Any game that produces 86 frees in an hour does not provide good entertainment, but does illustrate the amount of tension and respect both sides held for each other. It was also the first time the sides met since the infamous 'brawl' league final in 1994 which Castletown won, so neither side were prepared to give an inch. The two main turning points revolved around two incidents; a superb Nicky D'Arcy goal, and the controversial sending off of Castletown midfielder Sean MacCormack. Wind-assisted, Kilanerin opened up a five point lead before McCormack appeared to clash with Michael Higgins as the Kilanerin man attempted to pick up the ball. The sending off was very surprising but Kilanerin took full advantage to establish a stranglehold on the match. Veteran corner-back Pat Murray ended up as the spare man, and he succeeded in performing the sweeper role superbly, denying Castletown any goal chances. Kilanerin eventually lead 0-8 to 0-3 at half-time, and although Castletown started the second half with an Eamonn Scallan point, Kilanerin turned the screw with D'Arcy's goal, which effectively won the game. Man of the match Paul Hughes, who was superb throughout, fed D'Arcy and from an angle he fired the ball past Tommy Masterson in the Castletown goal and into the top corner. Hughes was involved in nearly everything Kilanerin did on the day and gave a series of Castletown markers a torrid time. The remainder of the game was purely academic with Castletown coming back into it with three points to Kilanerin's one, but Kilanerin's short passing game proved to be very effective in defending their lead against a strong wind in the second half. Kilanerin Team: Barry Hughes; Pat Murray, PJ Gethings, Chris Murray; Michael Hughes (Annagh), Michael Higgins, Stephen Kavanagh; Jim D'Arcy; Seamus Hughes; Pat Forde (0-5), Michael D'Arcy, John Hegarty (0-2); Nicky D'Arcy (1-1), Paul Hughes, Donal Noonan (0-1).
