John was, apparently, a man of wealth, and the story goes that he was
a ship-builder. He purchased land in South Carolina and settled his
nephew there. He bought land in Boston and settled his brother there.
He settled in New Rochelle, NY, later removing to Fairfield, CT, where
he was living in 1710. The first wife of John died in SC along with
two sons. A third son died in the north. He along with several other
Huuguenot families that had been to Germany bought about 5 square
miles of land located about 20 miles eastward of New York City - which
they named New Rochelle. At this time, 1695, he married his servant,
Johanna Lyon, who came from France with them. John sent Louis Lyon to
his brother in Yorkshire, England to learn to be a physician. When
Louis Lyon returned to America, he settled in Milford, CT and
practiced medicine. He came quite well to do, but never married. He
considered Johannah's children as his own - particularly Lewis
Mallette. They are buried in Old Stratford Cemetary on North Avenue,
now Bridgeport,
