Jane Spear lost both her parents at an early age. Her father wasa sea-captain. When her parents died, she came to live with richerrelatives at what is now Glinch House, Newbliss, Co. Monaghan.
She and husband James and first child Joseph emigrated toLiverpool, England where James worked as a tanner. He died and leftthe young family almost penniless. Jane was just able to pay forpassage to Newry--she landed with 3 half-pennies in her pocket andthree kids. Luckily she met neighbors from Killeevan, the Wards, whogave her a lift, saving her from walking all the way to Killeevan.
She lived in Killacoona until her death. Her father-in-lawwelcomed her. She was known to have great character and ability, andwas a staunch Catholic. She wore the old Irish hooded cloak.
