He married Linda Heyns and they had children: Fr. Richard (Dick)Quigley, Edward (Dr. Eddie) Quigley, James Quigley, and Paul Quigley(family historian).
James attended seminary school as his secondary school. It wasexpected he would become a priest. He left school and went toLiverpool working as a clerk in an oil company for 18 months, butdidn't like it. Opportunities were limited for Catholics. In 1892, hemet a barrister (J.L. Finnegan) and former MP representing Ennis inParliament. He advised James to join the French Foreign Legion, asJames was 6ft 4 ins tall and strong. He couldn't afford a commissionin the British Army, and was too nationalistic to consider it.Finnegan, who had fought for the French in the Franco-Prussian war,wrote a letter of recommendation for James.
He didn't speak much of the Legion, and had no nostalgicfeelings of affection, nor romantic notions of it. He didn't trustmost of his fellow soldiers. The only battle he ever spoke of wasagainst swarms of locusts. He was in the Suez Canal when he literallyjumped ship and went ashore, losing his boots in the process. Hemanaged to walk about 30 miles to Port Said (suffering hallucinationsin the heat). The British Consulate said he couldn't help, and wasrequired to turn him over to the French authorities for desertion,but gave him a chance to leave. (Otherwise, he probably would'vebeen killed.) Jame wandered Port Said barefoot and penniless, untilhe saw a sign in English. He went in and was able to get help fromthe Protestants there, who took him in for 2 weeks. They introducedhim to Capt. Swan, who let James work odd jobs on ship to pay for hispassage to Liverpool.
He taught in Liverpool--French, Math and Science. But he tiredof it, as he tended to be impatient and short-tempered. He even helda boy out the window to get him to behave in class.
He eventually became County Surveyor of Meath, from 1907 to 1923.He went to Lisdoonvarna in 1911. At the Atlantic Hotel, he met hislovely wife Linda, a fine singer and granddaughter of the man whobuilt the hotel. She was from a rather spoiled background, and he hada car, a good job and a romantic past. They were married 3 monthslater.
James was a member of the Volunteer movement in Ireland. He wasreturning from some surveying work and came upon the Battle atAshbourne, the heaviest fighting outside of Dublin,
28 Apr 1916. He was arrested as a spy, accused of signaling thepolice whereabouts, and put on trial. It was newsworthy because ofhis position as County Surveyor. He claimed innocence, that he onlycame along by chance. In fact, he did actually know about the policeon the way to the area, and was trying to warn the Volunteers in orderto avoid bloodshed. He was found not guilty at the trial andreleased.
In Sep.1920 the Meath Volunteers captured and burned an RICbarracks at Trim. James was arrested in Dec. 1920 by the military,for his own good, as they learned that the police wanted to arresthim, and the Tans would probably have shot him. He was in a jail-campuntil about Christmas 1921, allowed to write one letter home a week.
He became Chief Roads Engineer in 1923, but regretted having toretire at age 65. He visited America in 1930. He ran for Senate, butlost. He died in Oct. 1941.
