__ | _GEORGE or SANDY? ROSS _| | | | |__ | | |--DONALD ROSS | (1827 - 1901) | __ | | |________________________| | |__
[435]
Donald Ross' parents were born in Scotland, as we know from thecensus. Donald was married in 1849 in West Gwillimbury to thedaughter of an early Simcoe co. settler from Ireland. But no name wasgiven for Donald's father. The first settlers of Scotch Settlement inW. Gwillimbury in Simcoe co., Ontario tended to be from Helmsdale,Scotland, so it is likely that Donald's parents originated there. Atthat time, some Scottish Highlanders were being forced off their smallland holdings so that large sheep farms could take their place. Earlysettler George Ross is a possible father of Donald; another pre-1837settler in W. Gwillimbury was Sandy (Alexander) Ross. George wasprobably one of the fugitives that escaped Lord Selkirk's Red Riversettlement (near Fort Garry) and eventually formed Scotch Settlementin Simcoe county. The name George Ross was found on the 1871 censusand in Auld Kirk Cemetery in West Gwillimbury.
Donald worked as a carpenter & a farmer and was C. Presbyterian. Hepurchased land in 1855 when Wallace twp., Perth co., Ontario was firstbeing opened up for settlement, as his Reid in-laws also did. Hisname was given as Donald Ross, Esq., 3rd Concession of Wallace, whichis a location designation. Apparently still living in Wallace twp.,Perth co., Ontario in 1895 at the time of daughter Emma's wedding andin 1901 (per census). He sold his land in Wallace Twp. in 1902 andmoved away (according to Stratford-Perth archives). Don't knowDonald's burial /death place or whereabouts after 1902.

Interestingly, there was a younger Donald Ross living in the sametownship in 1901 as this Donald Ross. The younger Donald Ross was b.3 April 1862 (age 38) & was married to Christina b. 30 April 1866(age 34); they had dau "Tena" age 5 b. 27 May 1886 (this should havebeen 1896 ? or the age should have been 15). Also had a sonRutheford, b. 14 Dec 1887, age 4 (seems like his birthdate or age isoff). Unknown if this Donald is related to ours.
[437] His daughter's death cert. says he was born in Scotland, but all thecensus info gives his birthplace as Ontario. (He was Scottish.) Theyear of birth is unclear, since census info gives varying ages. Hewas "42" in 1871; "48" in 1881; "64" in 1891; and "74" in 1901. Thatimplies that he was born either in 1827, 1829 or 1833. Since he wasmarried in 1849, and his wife was born in late 1826, then the 1827year seems most likely.
[439] There is no obit. in the Stratford-Perth Archives, which is odd, sincehe lived in the area for over 50 years. Donald's burial place isunknown.

Marriage date from a family bible notation, and also found in the bookMarriage Registers of Simcoe District 1842 - 1857: "Donald Ross ofWest Gwillimbury Twp. married Rebecca Reid of West Gwillimbury Twp. on5 April 1849, by Rev William Fraser (United
Presbyterian Minister). Witnesses: Benjamin K. Jones and MatthewBrandon." No info on their parents.
Benjamin Jones, witness, was apparently a junior pastor with theMethodist Church (Bradford circuit, incl. W. Gwillimbury.)
Matthew Brandon was one of several Brandons listed as pre-1837settlers in West Gwillimbury.
(Side note on Rev. Wm. Fraser: "The Rev. Wm. Fraser, D.D., remainedpastor of the Bond Head congregation until 1879, having served therefor a period of 44 years. The Rev. Wm. Fraser, D.D., was a native ofNova Scotia, and soon after his ordination to the ministry came toUpper Canada and entered upon his life work at Bond Head. While inthis charge, in addition to his regular church work, he took an activepart in educational affairs, some account of which may be gatheredfrom the chapter on schools. He was the first Township Superintendentfor schools in West Gwillimbury in 1844, and indeed the only one tohold that office in the township, having again been appointed on theresumption of Township Superintendents in 1850 and reappointed fortwenty-one years in succession, until the office was finally abolishedand county superintendents appointed. His death occurred at Barrie, onDec. 25, 1892, in his 85th year. Several of his sons have beendistinguished in church and educational work:--Rev. J. B. Fraser,Annan; Rev. R. D. Fraser, Toronto; Prof. W. H. Fraser of TorontoUniversity; and Prof. G. A. H. Fraser, of Colorado." )
