From Irish Surnames, by MacLysaght--In Irish, Quigley is OCoigligh. A branch of the O Fiachra, situated at Carra, Co. Mayo, 16thcentury. Also "herenachs of Clontivrin in the Fermanagh part ofClones parish and strong still in the Clones area."--The MonaghanStory by Livingstone, p.605.
The Quigley info comes from Paul Quigley's booklet, 1992. Hissources included a 1945 manuscript by his brother Fr. Dick; notesfrom his other brothers Eddie and Jim; and various old papers.
Joseph may have had a sister Clare, which was a family name.
In 1770s Catholics were allowed to take land on long leases inIreland.
Joseph was a successful farmer and physically strong. He was chasedout of his home and "hamstrung" by Protestant yeoman (out ofjealousy?) which caused him to be crippled for life. He began to mendshoes for a living, but kept the farm, probably with help.
Joseph's son James later married a Protestant woman Jane Spear(she converted to Catholic).
