Transactional Analysis Book Reviews - pre 1999

(Personal Reviews by Elizabeth Cleary)

1972 Games students Play ( and what to do about them.) by Ken Ernst, PhD ;Pub Celestial Arts

A good read for parents and teachers, especially second-level age groups. Easier to read than to apply. Challenges parents and teachers to look at their own behaviour and attitude.

I was delighted to get this book at last, my only regret being that I hadn’t had it while I was still teaching young students. I particularly liked the way Ken Ernst got straight down to the matter in hand, namely the varieties of ways that students and teachers get hooked into each other and between them frustrate the task of transferring knowledge.

I liked the way the games are divided into different categories: Trouble-makers, Put-Downs, Tempters and then a good section on Teacher games.

I also found it helpful to have similar games compared, so that a new-comer to transactional analysis theory would have guidelines and points to watch for. I also have to admit that I found at least one game that I have been playing myself without being aware of it. Definitely a worthwhile purchase at £9.95 plus postage.

1978 Transactional Analysis A Modern and Comprehensive Text of TA Theory and Practice

by Stan Woolams and Michael Brown, Pub. Huron Valley Institute Press.

Seems well written, has plenty of clear diagrams. Fairly advance theory. Will write a review of it when I have it read.

1979 Changing Lives through Re-decision Therapy by Mary McClure Goulding and Robert L Goulding Pub Grove Press

Quote: This book is written to teach psychotherapists how to cure people. It is also written to help people cure themselves. I haven’t finished reading this one either, but it looks really good. It has plenty of dialogues, including the therapist/client, and clients memories. Foreward by Virginia Satir.

1985 It’s Never Too Late to be Happy The Psychology of Self-Reparenting by Muriel James,

Pub by Addison-Wesley

Excellent for beginners, plenty of exercises, Good Bibliography for further reading. Illustrated with black and white photos.

1991 Passion for Life by John James and Muriel James. Pub. by Plume Press (Penguin)

I did a course with this mother and son team in the summer. This book isn’t strictly TA, but does include a clear section on the basics. The blurb says: The ultimate resource if you’re looking for something more in you spiritual life than rules, regulations or traditional rituals. I thoroughly enjoyed it

1991 Transactional Analysis in Education by George Adams (ed.), published by Ecrit

24 essays of interest to teachers, parents, and those working with children with learning difficulties. Well worth buying.
