New €3 million extension and sports facility opened at Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy.

Minister for Trade and Commerce, Mr. Michael Ahern T.D., on September 11, 2004 performed the official opening of a major new €3 million extension and sports hall at Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy, Co.Cork. The extension involves a science laboratory, a lecture-theatre style demonstration room, a technology laboratory, four new classrooms and a pastoral care office.

Speaking at the opening, the Minister said it was particularly appropriate that much of the new space created in the school was devoted to practical work in science and technology.

"Ireland's recent economic growth and future development is closely linked to its continued evolution as a knowledge based economy. To this end, the provision of well equipped facilities for hands-on practical work will do much to ensure a heightened interest and greater expertise in science and technology disciplines."

Referring to the new sports facilities the Minister said that physical education and sport have also assumed a greater importance in the contemporary school curriculum. "Increased leisure time means that we have to be more creative in the development of our pastimes and out of work interests. The Commission on Obesity has reminded us of the need to be active in our leisure time and paticipation in physical education and sport offers ideal opportunities in this regard".

Minister Ahern thanked the Loreto Sisters for donating the site on which the sports hall is built and Cork County Council for a significant grant towards its construction. He referred in particular to the Fundraising committee, the Parents' Association and Past Pupil's Union for their efforts. The Minister concluded by thanking the Principal, teachers and support staff at the Loreto school.

"The children and the community are very fortunate to be served by such excellent and committed people and I wish all connected with this school every success in the months and years ahead".
