LORETO NEWSLETTERJune 2003 Building UpdateClearly visible now are the results of the fundraising carried out by so many parents, past pupils and staff throughout the year. The new extension, which will include a science laboratory and demonstration theatre, a technology room and other classrooms, is expected to be ready by September. The Sports Hall is scheduled for completion in October. These will provide much needed extra space and state of the art facilities for our pupils. The last draw for a Ford Ka and other prizes will take place in the school on Tuesday, 1st July. Thank you to all those who have supported and are continuing to support the building project in so many different ways. New Deputy PrincipalMs.Marian Daly has been appointed Deputy Principal with effect from 1st September. Marian has wide knowledge and experience of many aspects of education and as a member of Loreto staff since 1980 and a former staff representative on the Parents' Committee, is very well known to pupils and parents alike.
CamogieOur camogie players rounded off the year well by getting to the All-Ireland Final of the Camogie Sevens. We defeated St. Pat's, Maghera, Loreto Wexford and St. Mary's, Athenry, before succumbing to St. Mary's, Charleville.HockeyThe Intermediate Hockey team reached the Munster League Final in which we were narrowly defeated.IT NewsComputer students are well on the road towards achieving their (computer) driving licence!Over 100 students availed of the opportunity to sit modules of the ECDL this year. Loreto Secondary School is now an accredited test centre and can offer the official examinations to students. The ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence) is an International Certificate in basic computer literacy. It is recognised in EU member states and eighteen other European states. We hope to build on this success next year and certify more learner drivers! Nasa ScholarshipCongratulations to Zöe O'Mahony, a 5th year Physics student, who will 'boldly go' where other Loreto students have gone before.Zöe is this year's winner of the NASA Scholarship. She was selected to attend and represent Ireland and Loreto at the 2003 International Space School, on scholarship, at Houston, Texas, USA. This is held for 3 weeks at the end of July. This wonderful opportunity is open to all 5th year Physics students. Zöe will be hosted by astronauts and employees of NASA and will be given an invaluable insight into all aspects of space exploration and the American way of life. To fund raise for the trip, the 5th years held a very successful Lucky Dip. This was 'launched' by special guest Katie. The idea 'took off' so well that next year we hope to reach for the stars. Keep all that bric-a-brac handy!
Choir SuccessAt the Cork Choral Festival the School Choir won the Award for the Best English song in the Festival with Schubert's The Lord is My Shepherd. First place in the School Choir section unfortunately eluded us by half a mark. This year's Leaving Cert marks the departure of eighteen very valued choir members, so there will be many new voices in next year's choir.Student CouncilThis has been a busy year for members of the Student Council. As well as representing the concerns and interests of the student body throughout the year, they had a stand at the Open Evening, helped with the catering after the 1st year Mass in March and the Leaving Cert Graduation Mass in May and ran an Easter raffle to raise funds. On Tuesday 20th May four student council members, Bevena, Jane, Stephanie and Marie, travelled to Dublin to a meeting of the Union of Secondary Students. As a result, the Executive has decided that the Loreto Fermoy Student Council will become a full member of the U.S.S. Members of the Loreto Fermoy Students Executive Council Committee: School FleeceThe Student Council Executive felt that a school fleece would be of great benefit to the comfort of students, especially during the winter months. After much research, negotiation and consultation with students, staff and Mrs. Whyte, a green fleece with the school crest was decided on. The fleece, which will be optional, will be available in Shaws', Joe Murphy's and Hickeys' from late July.Return to SchoolMonday 1st September - Staff OnlyTuesday 2nd September - 1st Years - 9.00 -1.00.
