Marita Conlon Mc Kenna's Visit
A few months ago my teacher put on a movie called Under the Hawthorn Tree . This was based on a book by Marita Conlon Mc Kenna. At that time I wasn't so sure who she was but I loved the movie. It was a great adventure and there was a few sad bits in it.
Then a few weeks later my teacher read the book of Under the Hawthorn tree, but I preferred the movie .About 2 months later at assembly, my principal, Sr. Justine said that Marita Conlon Mc Kenna would be coming to our school the following week. Suddenly the movie Under the Hawthorn Tree popped into my head. I was very excited. Sr. Justine was offering some of her books to read, but I did not put my hand up for any of the books because I did not think I would finish it in time.
Finally the day came and I waited patiently for Sr. Justine to call our class up to the hall. First of all, it was the two 5th classes and then the two sixth classes. The two 5th classes had a great view.
She told us about her childhood and how she learned to read. She started off by telling us about her Dad who was not into reading. He was a gambler. One day when Marita was small she sat beside her Dad and looked at the paper. The both looked at the page of the horse betting. Marita read out the horses names. Most days they bet and that was how she learned to read.
I had a brilliant day and I wished she could stay.
