Our trip to the Back Garden Zoo

by Lisa, Nikki, Claire, Jessica, Ashley, Holly, Ciara and Karen.

Eanna Ní Lamhna is on Creature Feature, Open House and on the radio. She came to our school. We went out to our school garden  with Eanna. We saw the wildlife there. It was a beautiful day. We found a ladybird, a garden spider, a tiger spider and woodlouse. We saw lots of insects. Eanna had a bucketful of snails. She showed us snails and let us hold them. The whole class got to hold a snail. We had fun.

We picked lovely white flowers and put them in the bucket and we found two creepy crawlies.

We saw a lot of trees. Eanna showed us all the trees and told us the names of the trees. We were looking at the ash trees, the beech trees, the sycamore trees and the chestnut trees. The sycamore is the only tree with a red part on it. We went over to the  trees and took one leaf from each one of them.

Then we went into the garden and we saw some herbs. Each herb had a different smell. One smelled like curry, another like lemon. The herbs we found were lemon balm, curry plant, fennel and thyme.

We saw wildflowers. We learned the names of the wildflowers. There were dandelions, cherry blossoms, daisies and robin run the hedge.

We learned about the dandelion and how it got its name. You see  dante is the French word for teeth and the leaf of the dandelion is like  lions teeth. The dandelion is also called wet the bed because years and years ago there was a famine and people had no food to eat. So some people ate the leaves of the dandelion but some people ate too many leaves and the wet the bed.

The daisy is so called because it opens its eye in the day and closes its eye at night.

We had a great day finding out all these things.

After a while we went inside and talked about all the things we found.
