Community Games success in Athlone

We arrived back from Athlone safe and sound last night with our fair share of medals. A great weekend was enjoyed by competitors, managers and parents.  Here are some of the photos from the event.  Win, lose of draw the young Community Games participants from Duagh/Lyre did us proud.

Duagh/Lyre u-16 Girls Basketball team who won silver medals in the Community Games National Finals in Athlone last weekend. The girls were up against the hot favourites, Oranmore/Maree of Galway in the semi-final. They beat them 32 points to 27 in a thrilling encounter. On the following day they took on Drimnagh of Dublin. It went to extra time. Final score Duagh/Lyre 33; Drimnagh 34.

On Saturday evening after their basketball match the team headed for Banagher where Eibhlis Dillon and Laura Sheeran participated with the Kerry u-16 Football team.  (Report by Liz Keane - Photo by Nelius Collins).

 Darragh Maher did his parish and his county proud in Athlone last weekend.  Darragh did not qualify in the final of the Boys u-12 as he was cycling out of age.  We hope to see Darragh back again next year in the same age group.


William O'Connor, Lyre and Michael Costello, Duagh. Michael together with his parents Rose and Dan travelled up last Sunday morning from Kilmorna, Duagh just to support his two Lyre friends who had made it through to the finals in cycling. What a supporter!

Bronze Medal Winners

Table Tennis, Music and Soccer

The under 16 girls claimed silver medals.  The team was Eibhlis Dillon, Aisling Mangan, Laura Sheeran and Mariah Stack.   Silver medals also went to Grainne Sheehy, Alison Taren and Kylie and Margaret Walsh in the group music.  Special thanks to Wayne Taren for his work in preparing the girls  for the competition.   The under 15 boys indoor soccer team got through to the semi final and will be in action on Sunday in Annascaul.  The team is; Oisin Mangan, Carrig McNulty, Patrick Murphy, Aaron O'Connor, Padraig O'Donoghue, Dylan O'Regan, Thomas Scanlon and Stephen Stack.  The girls team competes in Mountcoal next Saturday.  Finally a big thanks to all who gave so generously to our church gate collection last weekend.  All the monies go to funding events for the children of the parish.
