Local Interest

Macreddin

The townland of Macreddin is steeped in history. Named after a 4th century chief called Credin, Macreddin in bygone days was a booming area with regular fair days, which were not only important for business but also were a highlight of the local social calendar. From the front door of the B&B one can enjoy fantastic views of Cushbawn Hill, which is fondly know by locals as Macreddin Rock, to which we owe our name. It is a popular walking trail which boasts amazing views of the surrounding countryside from the summit.

Aughrim

The village of Aughrim is one of the most beautiful villages in Ireland. Situated in a valley where the River Ow meets the River Derry it boasts gratifying granite buildings, the granite being supplied from a local quarry in Tinnakilly. Its greenery, river banks and general attractions such as the old forge have been widely acclaimed not least by the Tidy Towns Association as Aughrim has been awarded the tidiest village in Wicklow from 1996 to date and is hotly tipped to win the national title in the coming years. Also a historic area, there is a plaque for Anne Devlin, fateful servant to Robert Emmet on the bridge. To commerorate the two hundreth anniversary of the 1798 Rebellion a fine monument was erected which stands in the centre of the village.

Places to Visit

Greenane Farm Museum and Maze

Situated 3 km from Macreddin Rock B&B the farm museum has a fine collection of exhibits going back over 200 years, to a time when traditional hill farming used only the horse. The maze was planted in 1988 and a stream flows through it to a pond in the circular centre. Trying to find this centre proves to be a fun adventure for all.

Avondale House & Parnell Natioal Memorial Park, Rathdrum

Avondale House was the birthplace and home of Charles Stewart Parnell (1846-1891) one of the greatest political leaders in Irish history. You can visit and tour the beautiful Georgian House and magnificent forest park of over 500 acres or take one of the many walks in the Memorial Park.

Wicklow Gaol, Wicklow Town

A recent €2 million refurbishment has turned Wicklow Gaol into a must-see tourist attraction. The gaol dates to 1702 and was open to prisoners as late as 1924. The fantastic exhibition centre brings the history of the Gaol and of the era to life through amazing audio-visual displays and re-constructions.

Glendalough and Wicklow Mountains National Park

Glendalough, an ancient monastic settlement, nestling in a valley of 2 lakes, hardly needs an explanation. It is without doubt one of the most amazing places in Ireland and well worth a visit. The National Park is situated around the upper lake of Glendalough and is approx. 20,000 ha in total. It comprises of a huge range of flora and fauna and is a fine example of what Wicklow has to offer.
