Goalkeeper Duffy to rescue

Saturday 10th April 2004 - Credit Union Senior Football League

Magheracloone 0-9 v Scotstown 0-8

A point from a free by goalkeeper Shane Duffy four minutes from the end of normal time saw Magheracloone edge the result in this closely contested yet quite entertaining Credit Union Senior Football League game in Magheracloone on Saturday evening last. It had been more or less score for score all through this game with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions but any time Scotstown threatened to take a hold Magheracloone always had the capacity to respond with the accuracy of Tom Freeman proving a vital factor.
Magheracloone lost the services of Damien Freeman after just four minutes with a bad leg injury that later required stitches, and they did miss his services but they compensated with an improved work-rate and substitute Shane Martin also got in on the scoring with a good point from play in the 29th minute of the first half.

Tom Freeman got Magheracloone off the mark as early as the fourth minute with a point from a free and he was on target again in the 17th minute to restore his side to the lead after Francis Caulfield had equalised for Scotstown in the ninth minute. A good period for Scotstown saw Paraic McCrudden equalise in the 18th minute with a good point from play and two minutes later, he was on target from a free to put Scotstown in the lead for the first time. It was a lead however, that was short-lived as a minute later Tom Freeman had Magheracloone back on level terms.

The see-saw nature of the encounter continued with McCrudden restoring Scotstown to the lead with a point from a free in the 27th minute but the home side finished the half with a flurry of activity that saw them hit three points without reply in the closing minutes. Ciaran McCaul it was who equalised in the 28th minute and then points apiece from Shane Martin and Paul Jones saw Magheracloone ahead by two at the break, Magheracloone 0-6, Scotstown 0-4.
Within two minutes of the restart, Brain McGinty reduced the deficit to the minimum but Magheracloone responded quickly with a brace from Tom Freeman to put keep then three in front, his point in the fourth minute coming from play and in the seventh coming from a free kick conversion. As in the first half, however no one allowed to gain a decisive hold and Scotstown now set about reversing the situation.
Scores were hard to come by as the marking was tight but by the 24th minute of an at times frenetic second half the Blues had drawn level with points from Nicholas Corrigan in the ninth and 15th minutes, the second from a free, and Shane McCarville, who had come on as a substitute early in the second half.
At this stage it looked as if the game was heading for a draw but Magheracloone came in search of further scores and they were rewarded when goalkeeper, Shane Duffy, came up-field to convert free kick in the 26th minute for what ultimately proved the winner although Scotstown did have one or two late chances that could have seen them take a share of the spoils. Magheracloone's Tom Freeman was sent off on a straight red card during the second half.
