The Famine Graveyard

The Famine Graveyard is situated in Summerhill behind St. Patrick's Hospital - the former workhouse. It was the burial ground for hundreds of victims of the famine in the 1840's. It is a place of historical importance in our town and was officially opened by President Mary McAleese on 18th July 1998. When we visited it, we saw the fountain and headstones in memory of those who died and the remains of the old soup kitchen with its large pots. We felt lucky not to be living in the last century. We think it is a great remembrance to those from this area who died during the Famine. This garden of remembrance has been tastefully developed knowing that it will be a place that tourists will like to visit. This peaceful place will allow them think about the hardship and suffering of some of their ancestors.
