Crannogs

The islands in Keshcarrigan, Carrickport and Castlefore lakes are probably crannogs. A crannog was a Bronze age artificial island where people fled for protection. Oak piles were driven into the mud of the lake in a circular fashion and the inside filled with stones and clay to bring it above water level. The crannog was approached by a causeway of stones in a zig-zag fashion. This made it difficult for the enemy to attack.
