Cootehall Central School

Cootehall is situated between Boyle and Carrick on Shannon. Cootehall is a picturesque village overlooking the Boyle River. John Mac Gahern a well-known writer used to live in the barracks in Cootehall. One of his books is called 'The Barracks' Cootehall central school was officially opened in 1980 but the first children started here in 1979. Our teacher and principal Ms. Martin was a student in the school when it first opened. She had been in Knockvicar school before that. Knockvicar, Cootehall and Hollymount schools closed and all the children came to this new school. There were 154 children in this school in 1979 and now 20 years later there are less than 90 children in this school.

We have five teachers in our school and they are all very nice. The classes go from infants to sixth. There are six classrooms in our school. One room is used as by the Learning Support Teacher and the play school uses another. We have lots of P.E equipment and we take part in basketball and football competitions. We have a basketball court and a volleyball court and two football pitches. There is a playschool in our school. We do a lot of recyling. For the last three years our school was involved in a Comenius Project. We linked up with schools in Germany, Finland, and Hungary .The teachers from these countries came to our school and some of our teachers travelled to their schools.
