NEIL GORDON KINNOCK
(born 1942), British politician; born in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, England; son of a miner; educated at University College, Cardiff; organizer and tutor in industrial and trade-union studies at Workers' Educational Association; elected to Parliament 1970; named to Labour party's national executive committee 1978; elected leader of the Labour party from 1983; led his party to abandon its radical stance on disarmament and large-scale nationalization; one of Parliament's wittiest and most passionate speakers; published 'Wales and the Common Market' (1971) and 'As Nye Said' (1980).
