This series of pictures shows the steps involved in the building of the slatted shed to keep the cows in over winter on our farm.

Remember, you can click on any of the pictures to show a bigger version of them.

SlattedShed1.jpg (15420 bytes) The first job was to clear the ground and dig the foundations. The land is very rocky, so heavy digging equipment was needed.
SlattedShed2.jpg (19370 bytes) In order to keep the cattle clean, it is necessary to dig a deep pit beneath the shed. You can see here how deep is it, with my brothers standing in it!
SlattedShed3.jpg (17208 bytes) Next the foundations are laid. For this we needed a big concrete mixer which poured the concrete into the base.
SlattedShed4.jpg (15022 bytes) Then the floor of the shed is put down. Big concrete slabs are delivered and lifted into place. The slabs have long holes in them, and are what give the slatted shed its name. The holes are narrow, so that the cows don't get there hooves caught in them.
SlattedShed5.jpg (12649 bytes) The rest of the shed is built above from metal girders and sheets.
SlattedShed6.jpg (7939 bytes) Then the shed is ready to move the cattle in!
