Seán was born in 1882 in Dublin. At the age of 28 he assisted Pádraig Pearse during the 1916 Easter Rising.

Seán was one of the founders of Sinn Féin and was a Minister for Public Health. Before becoming President, he was Tánaiste and Minister for Finance.

Seán entered office on the 25th of June 1945 and served as President for 14 years, the longest time permitted under the Constitution.

He died on the 23rd of November 1966.
