HAIKU HOUR
We had a Haiku Hour in the Phoenix Park with the poet, Maeve O’Sullivan. She explained to us how to write a Haiku, a short poem with 17 or fewer syllables. It should explain how you have heard, smelt, touched or tasted something. They don’t have to rhyme. Then we spent half an hour seeking “haiku moments”.
When the time came to an end we each read our best haiku. Here are some examples of the Haiku we wrote in the Phoenix Park.
The sun’s rays heat me
Chirping birds floating above
Smell the buttercups
Nettles stinging weeds
Weeds are wrapped around nettles
But nettles don’t care
People walking their dogs
Footsteps are in the distance
Children talking softly
The little bird
Moving his wings
But not going anywhere
The birds are singing
Trees so calm and still
Grass cold and wet
Birds are whistling
Black dog loudly barking
It's a lovely day
Many thanks to Ms. O’Sullivan, as a great day was enjoyed by all.
