Evergreen and Deciduous Trees.

Evergreens are trees that keep their leaves all year round. Most evergreens are conifers. e.g. pine. Some evergreen in Ireland are the holly, the pine and the spruce.

Deciduous trees lose their leaves in autumn.

Facts

1. The larch is a conifer but not an evergreen.

2.The holly is an evergreen but not a conifer.

Broadleaf and Coniferous Trees

Broadleaf trees have wide, flat leaves whereas coniferous trees have narrow pointed leaves called needies. Conifer means cone carrying. Most broadleaf trees are deciduous.

Trees such as the sycamore, oak, beech,ash and horse chestnut are all broadleaf and deciduous. The Scots pine is coniferous but the yew and the juniper are evergreen but not conifers.

Facts

1.Forests of broadleaf trees need more then hundred years to mature.

2.Coniferous forests are ready for cutting after about fourty years.
